Firmware Versions 6.0(5) for Cisco IP Phone Models 7940 and 7960

The firmware image within the 6.0(5) install program is named P00306000500, and supports the Skinny Client Control Protocol (SCCP) for the following Cisco IP Phone models:

This firmware version is supported on Cisco CallManager Release 4.0(1), Service release 1 and higher, and Cisco CallManager Releases 4.0(1), 3.3, 3.2, and 3.1.

Image Authentication Support

Cisco provides image authentication with its various IP phone protocols. Image authentication allows the phone to detect if the image has been tampered with before it is programmed into the phone. If the image fails the authentication process then the phone will reject the image. Image authentication occurs through signed files. All Cisco 7940 and 7960 IP Phone loads 5.0 and newer are signed and can only be upgraded or downgraded to other signed releases.

The P00306000500 firmware uses signed (authenticated) files. This step improves IP phone security on the Cisco IP Phone models 7940 and 7960.

 

Installing the Firmware Load

Note: For the Cisco IP phones 7940 and 7960, you should not add the extension of .sbn or .bin to the firmware version name in the Cisco CallManager database.

 

Cisco IP Phone 7914 Expansion Module

If you are using the Cisco IP Phone 7914 Expansion Module, you must upgrade the Expansion Module to firmware release S00104000100 before you install the 6.0(5) Cisco IP Phone 7960/7940 phone load. The installation program is named cmterm-7914-sccp.4-0-1.exe, and is available on CCO in the same location as the installer for the 6.0(5) software.

 

Cisco IP Phone Model 7940/7960 Installation Instructions

Perform the following procedure:

  1. Click the following URL: http://www.cisco.com/cgi-bin/tablebuild.pl/ip-7900ser
  2. Download the file that is listed in Table 1 to your hard drive.

  1. Note the location where you saved the downloaded file.
  2. Double-click the file to start the installation.
  3. In the Welcome window, click Next.
  4. In the License Agreement window, click Yes.
  5. After the installation finishes, click OK.
  6. Reset all corresponding devices.

 

Cisco IP Phone Model 7940/7960 Alternate Firmware format

The Cisco IP Phone Model 7940/7960 Firmware version 6.0(5) is also supplied in a zip file, as an alternative in case a Cisco CallManager is not available to run the executable installer program. The name of this file is cmterm-7940-7960-sccp.6-0-5.zip.

After unzipping the firmware files, they should be manually copied to the appropriate directory on the TFTP server.
