This screen displays unmanaged disks. These disks have been added but not yet assigned a status. Status can be managed or hot spare. Volumes use managed disks for storage. Hot spares provide system resiliency and are used only if there is a disk failure. Hot spares do not count toward usable storage.
Select the disks to include in the disk folder by clicking on the disk name checkbox. After selecting the disks, click Continue to go to the next screen.
Disk folders allow you to group disks together. When you place disks into a disk folder, they become managed, and volumes can use them for storage. In the next screen you will designate disks to be used as hot spares from this group. Multiple volumes can share the storage contained in a disk folder. The same disk folder can include disks of varying size and speed. Each disk can be used to full capacity. If the disks vary in size, the capacity is not limited to the lowest disk's capacity.
Adding disks to an existing disk folder increases the available storage. Disks cannot be shared across multiple folders.
For general applications, put all disks into a single folder to maximize capacity and overall performance. For streaming applications, create a specific disk folder to support those applications.
