Select a Volume Type

Use this screen to select the volume type.

You will almost always use dynamic volumes. Compellent software is optimized for dynamic volumes.

The Dynamic Capacity license allows you to create dynamic volumes.

With dynamic volumes, storage is allocated and expanded as needed. You must create a dynamic volume to use Data Instant Replay. Dynamic volumes are recommended for almost all applications.

Dynamic volumes allow you to define volumes independent of the available physical disk space. Volumes may be larger than the available disk space. You may add disks at anytime to expand available storage space.

With static volumes, storage is pre-allocated. Static volumes are useful for applications requiring dedicated disk performance such as streaming real-time video or for limited storage growth applications.

What You Need to Know

Dynamic volumes pool storage space, sharing data volumes. As disk space is consumed, the size of the storage pool automatically expands.

To change the threshold setting to automatically expand the storage pool, select Administration>Configure System Defaults>Volumes-Dynamic.

RAID 10 is the default RAID level used for data redundancy.

Recommendations

Dynamic volumes are recommended unless the application specifically requires static volumes.
