Welcome to the Compellent Storage Center. With this system you can create, manage, and recover storage using new techniques that vastly improve storage simplicity, efficiency, and the overall user experience.
Upon completing the hardware connections, you must configure 4 items. Wizards are available to guide you through the entire storage creation process .
Ports and Servers relate to the physical controller and servers. Volumes and Mapping relate to the logical presentation of storage.
Configure Local Ports  to designate Front End/Back End and Primary/Reserved use. Before Volumes can be Mapped to Servers the Controller's local ports must be configured to specify whether a port carries traffic from Servers or to Storage Enclosures. This is usually a one time task that only needs to be repeated if HBAs are added or removed from a Controller.
Servers  connect and deliver storage requests to the Compellent System. Assign server names for easy identification with this wizard.
Volumes  define logical storage repositories and draw storage from Disk Folders.
Volumes on the Compellent System are Dynamic. Dynamic volumes allocate storage on write, allowing you to consume the minimal amount of storage while still presenting the server a larger volume size. The system automatically adds more physical storage from disk folders and can even tell you when to purchase more physical storage.
Data Instant Replay (the ability to create and manage past volume versions from specific points in time) works only with Dynamic volumes.
Mapping  links specified servers to volumes and acts as a security mechanism to restrict storage access. With a server-volume map, the server accesses the volume as it would an internal disk drive.
