Replacing a Disk Module (Palm-Sized NVMe SSD) Used for the Data Pilot Service

Impact on the System

• If disk modules become faulty, the system reliability deteriorates.
• If disk modules become faulty, the system performance will decrease but data consistency is not affected.
• During disk module replacement, the system performance will decrease. Therefore, you are advised to replace disk modules during off-peak hours.

Prerequisites

• The replacement disk module (spare part) has been prepared.
• The faulty disk module has been located.

Precautions

• To avoid data loss, only replace the disk modules whose alarm/location indicators are steady yellow.
• When removing a disk module, first remove it from its connector. Wait at least 10 seconds and then remove the disk module completely from the chassis.
• To prevent replacement failures, ensure that replacement disk modules are free from obvious foreign objects, collision, and scratches.
• To prevent replacement failures, ensure that the disk slots are free from foreign objects or obvious damage before installing disk modules.
• To prevent system faults, use the BOM code of the faulty disk module to apply for a replacement disk module.
• To avoid damaging disk modules and connectors, remove and install disk modules with even force.
• After inserting a disk module, wait at least 30 seconds before removing it to prevent damage to the disk module.
• To prevent system faults, do not replace disk modules with ones that have been used before.

When replacing a disk module used for the data pilot service, ensure that the interval between removing the disk module and installing a new disk module into the node does not exceed three minutes. Otherwise, the heat dissipation of the storage device will be affected and the system will be faulty.

Tools and Materials

• ESD gloves
• ESD wrist strap
• ESD bag
• Labels

Procedure

1. Remove the disk module.
   

   • When removing disk modules, correctly record the slots where disk modules reside.
   • The time from disk module removal to installation and restoration cannot exceed three minutes. Otherwise, the system will be faulty due to overtemperature.
   1. Press the ejector release button on the disk module. The ejector lever automatically ejects. See (1) in Figure 1.

   2. Hold the ejector lever of the disk module and pull out the disk module slowly. See (2) and (3) in Figure 1.

2. Put the removed disk module into an ESD bag.
3. Take the replacement disk module out of its ESD bag.
4. Install the disk module.
   

   Ensure that disk modules are inserted into the same slots before and after the replacement. Otherwise, services may be affected.

   1. Open the ejector lever completely and push the disk module into the node along the slot until it cannot move forward. See (1) in Figure 2.

   2. Close the ejector lever of the disk module to push the disk module into the node with the force between the ejector lever and the node. See (2) in Figure 2.

5. Check whether the replacement disk module is successfully installed.

   After inserting the disk module, wait 5 seconds and then check the disk module running indicator to determine whether the disk module has been successfully installed.

   If the disk module running indicator is steady on, the disk module is successfully installed. In this case, go to the next step. Otherwise, the disk module fails to be installed and you need to perform the following operations to restore the installation:

   1. Check whether the disk module has been firmly inserted. If not, wait 30 seconds and reinsert it.
   2. If the disk module still fails to be installed after you reinsert it, the link of the disk slot may be faulty. In this case, contact technical support.

Follow-up Procedure

After the disk module is replaced, label it to facilitate subsequent operations.

If you want to continue using the replaced disk, format the disk to clear residual data. Otherwise, the data pilot service may be abnormal.
