Replacing a Main Storage Disk Module (OceanStor Pacific 9146 (One Node per Chassis, One CPU per Node)/OceanStor Pacific 9346/OceanStor Pacific 9546)

Impact on the System

• If main storage disk modules are faulty, the system performance will decrease but data consistency is not affected.
• During the replacement of main storage disk modules, the system performance will decrease. Therefore, you are advised to replace main storage disk modules during off-peak hours.
• During the replacement of main storage disk modules, the data durability decreases during data reconstruction. After the reconstruction is complete, the data durability recovers.

Prerequisites

• The replacement main storage disk module (spare part) has been prepared.
• The faulty main storage disk module has been located.
• The disk pool to which the faulty main storage disk module belongs is in the normal or degraded state, and no data reconstruction task is running.

Precautions

• If a cache disk module and its corresponding main storage disk modules are faulty at the same time, you must replace the cache disk module first.
• To avoid data loss, only replace the disk modules whose alarm/location indicators are steady yellow.
• To prevent system faults, do not replace disk modules with ones that have been used before.
• To prevent system faults, do not change the location of a disk that is being used in a storage pool.
• To prevent replacement failures, ensure that replacement disk modules are free from obvious foreign objects, collision, and scratches.
• To prevent replacement failures, ensure that the disk slots are free from foreign objects or obvious damage before installing disk modules.
• To prevent system faults, use the BOM code of the faulty disk module to apply for a replacement disk module.
• To avoid damaging disk modules and connectors, remove and install disk modules with even force.
• After inserting a disk module, wait at least 30 seconds before removing it to prevent damage to the disk module.

• When removing a main storage disk module, first remove it from its connector. Wait at least 10 seconds and then remove the disk module completely from the disk drawer.
• SATA HDDs at the power-off status cannot be preserved for a long period of time.
  • Packed HDDs can be preserved for a maximum of 6 months. Unpacked HDDs that are powered off can also be preserved for a maximum of 6 months. Exceeding the maximum preservation time may cause data loss or HDD failure.
  • The maximum preservation time is determined based on the disk preservation specifications provided by disk vendors. For details, see the manuals provided by the disk vendors.

• During the replacement of main storage disk modules, complete the following operations within three minutes: Pull out the disk drawer, remove and insert main storage disk modules, and reset the disk drawer. Otherwise, the heat dissipation of the storage device will be affected and the system will be faulty.
• If the replacement is not complete within 3 minutes, reset the disk drawer and wait for at least 10 minutes. After the node temperature returns to normal, open the disk drawer again. If the overtemperature indicator of a node is on, ensure that the disk drawer has been reset and wait until the overtemperature indicator turns off. Wait for 10 minutes until the node temperature returns to normal and open the disk drawer again.

Procedure

1. Remove the front panel cover.
   Press the release button on the right of the front panel cover, tilt the front panel cover by 20° to 30° forward, and move the front panel cover rightward to separate it from the groove on the left of the system subrack. Then, remove the front panel cover. See (1), (2), and (3) in Figure 2.

2. Pull out the disk drawer.
   

   • The duration from the time when the disk drawer is pulled out to the time when the disk drawer is reset cannot exceed three minutes. Otherwise, the system will be faulty.
   • If the replacement is not complete within 3 minutes, reset the disk drawer and wait for at least 10 minutes. After the node temperature returns to normal, open the disk drawer again. If the overtemperature indicator of a node is on, ensure that the disk drawer has been reset and wait until the overtemperature indicator turns off. Wait for 10 minutes until the node temperature returns to normal and open the disk drawer again.

   1. Rotate the handles of the disk drawer until they are perpendicular to the front panel. See (1) in Figure 4.
   2. Pull the handles of the disk drawer with both hands to slowly pull the disk drawer out of the system subrack until the drawer cannot move. See (2) in Figure 4.

3. Remove the disk module.
   

   When removing disk modules, correctly record the slots where disk modules reside.

   Hold the handle of the disk module and pull the disk module out for approximately 3 cm. Wait at least 10 seconds and remove the disk module from the drawer. See Figure 5.

4. Put the removed disk module into an ESD bag.
5. Take the replacement disk module out of its ESD bag.
6. Install the disk module.
   

   Ensure that disk modules are inserted into the same slots before and after the replacement. Otherwise, services may be affected.

   Push the disk module into its slot in the disk drawer along the guide rails until the disk module clicks into place. See Figure 6.

7. Check whether the replacement disk module is successfully installed.

   After inserting the disk module, wait 5 seconds and then check the disk module alarm/location indicator to determine whether the disk module has been successfully installed.

   If the disk module alarm/location indicator is off, the disk module is successfully installed. In this case, go to the next step. Otherwise, the disk module fails to be installed and you need to perform the following operations to restore the installation:

   1. Check whether the disk module has been firmly inserted. If not, wait 30 seconds and reinsert it.
   2. If the disk module still fails to be installed after you reinsert it, the link of the disk slot may be faulty. In this case, contact technical support.

8. Reset the disk drawer.
   1. Press and hold the release buttons on both sides of the disk drawer and push them in the arrow direction to push the disk drawer back into the system subrack. See (1) and (2) in Figure 7.
      

      • Do not press the front end of the release buttons with your fingers. Otherwise, the release buttons may be damaged.
      • When resetting the disk drawer, ensure that its handles are perpendicular to the front panel.
      • After pushing the disk drawer 1 cm into the system subrack, release the release buttons to prevent hands from being clamped.

   2. After the disk drawer is completely inserted into the system subrack, rotate the handles of the disk drawer to reset them. See (3) in Figure 7.

9. Install the front panel cover.
   Align the latch on the left of the front panel cover with the groove on the left of the system subrack, and push the right of the front panel cover forward until you hear a click. Ensure that the front panel cover is fully secured to the system subrack. See (1) and (2) in Figure 8.

Follow-up Procedure

After the main storage disk module is replaced, label it to facilitate subsequent operations.
