Replacing a Main Storage Disk Module (OceanStor Pacific 9150/OceanStor Pacific 9350/OceanStor Pacific 9550)

HDDs are used as main storage disk modules to provide data storage space and are hot-swappable.

Impact on the System

Prerequisites

Precautions

  • During the replacement of main storage disk modules, complete the following operations within three minutes: Pull out the disk drawer, remove and insert main storage disk modules, and reset the disk drawer. Otherwise, the heat dissipation of the storage device will be affected and the storage device will be powered off due to high temperature.
  • If the replacement is not complete within 3 minutes, reset the disk drawer and wait for at least 10 minutes. After the node temperature returns to normal, open the disk drawer again. If the overtemperature indicator of a node is on, ensure that the disk drawer has been reset and wait until the overtemperature indicator turns off. Wait for 10 minutes until the node temperature returns to normal and open the disk drawer again.

Tools and Materials

Procedure

  1. Remove the front panel cover.

Press the release button on the right of the front panel cover, tilt the front panel cover by 20° to 30° forward, and move the front panel cover rightward to separate it from the groove on the left of the system subrack. Then, remove the front panel cover. See (1), (2), and (3) in Figure 3.

  2. Pull out the disk drawer.

    • Before pulling out a disk drawer, ensure that the signal cables connected to the device do not affect the pulling and pushing of the disk drawer.
    • Before pulling out a rear disk drawer, raise the handles on the front disk drawer until they are perpendicular to the front disk drawer.
    • To prevent the device from being powered off due to high temperature, reset the drawer within 3 minutes after the drawer is pulled out. Slide the drawer back immediately after the overtemperature indicator on the drawer panel turns on.

Raise the handles on the front disk drawer until they are perpendicular to the disk drawer. Then, hold the handles and slowly pull out the disk drawer. Do not pull fan modules out of the system subrack. See (1) and (2) in Figure 5.

  3. Remove the faulty disk module.

When removing disk modules, correctly record the slots where the disk modules to be replaced reside.

    1. Hold the handle of the disk module and pull the disk module out for approximately 3 cm. Wait at least 10 seconds and remove the disk module from the drawer. See Figure 6.
Figure 6 Removing a disk module
    2. The procedure for removing a disk module from a rear disk drawer is the same as that from a front disk drawer. If the faulty disk module is in the rear disk drawer, perform the preceding operations to remove the disk module from the rear disk drawer.

  4. Put the removed disk module into an ESD bag.
  5. Take the replacement disk module out of its ESD bag.
  6. Install the replacement disk module.

Ensure that disk modules are inserted into the same slots before and after the replacement. Otherwise, services may be affected.

    1. Push the disk module into its slot in the disk drawer along the guide rails until the disk module clicks into place. See Figure 7.
Figure 7 Installing a disk module
    2. The procedure for installing a disk module into a rear disk drawer is the same as that into a front disk drawer. If the faulty disk module was in the rear disk drawer, perform the preceding operations to install the replacement disk module into the rear disk drawer.

  7. Check the installation.

After inserting the disk module, wait 30 seconds and then check the disk module alarm/location indicator to determine whether the disk module has been successfully installed.

If the disk module alarm/location indicator is off, the disk module is successfully installed. In this case, go to 8. Otherwise, the disk module fails to be installed and you need to perform the following operations to restore the installation:
    1. Check whether the disk module has been firmly inserted. If not, wait one minute and reinsert it.
    2. If the disk module still fails to be installed after you reinsert it, the link of the disk slot may be faulty. In this case, contact Huawei technical support.

  8. Push the disk drawer back into the system subrack.

    • If the disk drawer is not completely pulled out, raise the handles on the disk drawer until they are perpendicular to the disk drawer and then push the disk drawer into the system subrack.
    • When the disk drawer is completely pulled out, perform the following steps to pull the release buttons on both sides of the disk drawer upwards and then push the disk drawer into the system subrack.
After installing the disk modules, raise the handles on the disk drawer until they are perpendicular to the disk drawer. Then, pull the release buttons on both sides of the disk drawer upwards, push the disk drawer back into the system subrack, and pull down the handles to their original positions. See (1), (2), and (3) in Figure 8.

  9. Install the front panel cover.

Align the latch on the left of the front panel cover with the groove on the left of the system subrack, and push the right of the front panel cover. Ensure that the latch on the right of the front panel cover is secured to the system subrack. See (1) and (2) in Figure 9.

Follow-up Procedure

After the main storage disk module is replaced, label it to facilitate subsequent operations.
