Replacing Fan Expansion Boxes

Impact on the System

When you replace a fan expansion box, the disk modules controlled by the faulty fan expansion box are powered off and the node performance deteriorates. Therefore, you are advised to replace the fan expansion box during off-peak hours.

Prerequisites

• A spare fan expansion box has been prepared.

Precautions

Replace a fan expansion box within three minutes. Otherwise, the heat dissipation of the storage device will be affected and the system will be overheated.

Procedure

1. Remove a faulty fan expansion box.
   1. Push the release buttons on the left and right sides of the fan expansion box upwards at the same time. The ejector levers eject automatically, as shown in step ① in Figure 1.

   2. Hold the ejector levers and slowly pull out the fan expansion box, as shown in step ② in Figure 1.
2. Remove fan modules.
   1. Press the latches on both sides of a fan module to unlock it, as shown in step ① in Figure 2.

   2. Lift the fan module slowly, as shown in step ② in Figure 2.
   3. Remove the loosened fan module from the slot.
3. Place the removed fan expansion box in an ESD bag.
4. Take the spare fan expansion box out of its ESD bag.
5. Install fan modules.
   Insert the fan module along the guide rails into the slot until you hear a click, which indicates that the fan cable connector is securely inserted into the connector. See step ① in Figure 3.

6. Install the spare fan expansion box.
   

   Ensure that the spare fan expansion box is inserted into the slot where the removed fan expansion box resides. Otherwise, services may be affected.

   Open the ejector levers of the fan expansion box completely, and push the box into the slot until you hear a click, as shown in step ① in Figure 4.

7. Check whether the installation is successful.

   After installing the fan expansion box, wait for 30 seconds, and then check whether the fan expansion box is successfully installed according to the running indicator on the fan expansion box.

   If the running indicator of the fan expansion box is steady green, the fan expansion box is successfully installed. Otherwise, the fan expansion box fails to be installed. Perform the following operations:

   1. Check whether the fan expansion box has been firmly inserted. If not, wait one minute and reinsert it.
   2. If the fan expansion box still fails to be installed after you reinsert it, the link of the fan expansion box may be faulty. In this case, contact Huawei technical support engineers.
