Replacing Main Storage Disk Modules

Impact on the System

• If main storage disk modules are faulty, the system performance will decrease but data consistency is not affected.
• During the replacement of main storage disk modules, the system performance will decrease. Therefore, you are advised to replace main storage disk modules during off-peak hours.
• During the replacement of main storage disk modules, the data durability decreases during data reconstruction. After the reconstruction is complete, the data durability recovers.

Prerequisites

• A spare main storage disk module has been prepared.
• The faulty main storage disk module has been located.
• The storage pool to which the faulty main storage disk module belongs is in the normal or degraded state, and no data reconstruction task is running.

• The vendor and type of the spare main storage disk module must be the same as those of the faulty main storage disk module.
• The capacity of the spare main storage disk module must be greater than or equal to that of the faulty main storage disk module.

Precautions

• If a cache disk module and its corresponding main storage disk module are faulty at the same time, you must replace the cache disk module first.
• During the replacement of main storage disk modules, complete the following operations within three minutes: Pull out the disk drawer, remove and insert main storage disk modules, and push the disk drawer back where it was. Otherwise, the heat dissipation of the storage device will be affected and the system will be overheated.
• To prevent system faults, do not replace disk modules with ones that have been used before.
• To prevent replacement failures, ensure that spare disk modules are free from obvious foreign objects, collision, and scratches.
• To prevent replacement failures, ensure that the disk slots are free from foreign objects or obvious damage before installing disk modules.
• To prevent data loss, only replace the main storage disk modules whose alarm/location indicators are steady yellow.
• When removing a main storage disk module, first remove it from its connector. Wait for 10 seconds and then remove the disk module completely from the disk drawer.
• To prevent damage to main storage disk modules or connectors, remove and install disk modules with even force.
• To prevent damage to main storage disk modules, wait at least one minute between removal and insertion.
• SATA HDDs at the power-off status cannot be preserved for a long period of time.
  • Packed HDDs can be preserved for a maximum of 6 months. Unpacked HDDs that are powered off can also be preserved for a maximum of 6 months. Exceeding the maximum preservation time may cause data loss or HDD failure.
  • The maximum preservation time is determined based on the disk preservation specifications provided by disk vendors. For details, see the manuals provided by the disk vendors.

Procedure

1. Remove a faulty dual-disk disk module.
   1. Press the release button on the ejector lever of the faulty dual-disk disk module and the ejector lever automatically ejects, as shown in step ① in Figure 1.

   2. Hold the ejector lever and slowly pull out the dual-disk disk module, as shown in step ② in Figure 1.
2. Remove the faulty main storage disk module.
   1. Optional: Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the screws from both sides of the faulty main storage disk module, as shown in step ① in Figure 2. Place the removed screws in an ESD bag for future use.

   2. Remove the faulty main storage disk module in the arrow direction, as shown in step ② in Figure 2.
3. Put the removed faulty disk module into an ESD bag.
4. Take the spare disk module out of its ESD bag.
5. Install the spare main storage disk module.
   1. Install the spare main storage disk module in the original slot in the arrow direction, as shown in step ① in Figure 3.

   2. Use a Phillips screwdriver to tighten the screws obtained in 2.a on both sides of the spare main storage disk module, as shown in step ② in Figure 3.
6. Install the dual-disk disk module.
   

   Install the dual-disk disk module into the original slot before the removal. Otherwise, services may be affected.

   1. Open the ejector lever of the spare dual-disk disk module completely and push the module into the node along the slot until the module does not move, as shown in step ① in Figure 4.

   2. Close the ejector lever of the dual-disk disk module so that the ejector lever is secured to the node.
7. Check whether the installation is successful.

   After inserting the dual-disk disk module, wait for one minute and then check the running indicator of the module to determine whether the installation is successful.

   If the running indicator of the dual-disk disk module is steady green, the module is successfully installed. Otherwise, the dual-disk disk module fails to be installed. Perform the following operations:

   1. Check whether the dual-disk disk module has been firmly inserted. If not, wait one minute and reinsert it.
   2. If the dual-disk disk module still fails to be installed after you reinsert it, the link of the disk slot may be faulty. In this case, contact technical support engineers.
