Managing Trap Settings

Trap is a Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) message type that indicates the occurrence of an event. This type of message is sent to a recipient through User Datagram Protocol (UDP), which is not fully reliable. If alarm information is reported in SNMP mode, you need to configure a Trap server IP address. After a Trap server IP address is configured, alarm information about a storage device will be sent to the specified application server or maintenance terminal.

Procedure

  1. Choose Settings > Alarm Settings > Alarm Notification > Trap Settings.
  2. View Trap notification parameters. Table 1 describes related parameters.

    Table 1 Trap notification parameters

    Parameter

    Description

    Server Address

Indicates the address of a Trap server (which can be a network management system or a storage system) for receiving alarm messages.

    Port

Indicates the port used by a Trap server to receive alarm messages. The value ranges from 1 to 65535.

    Version

Indicates the SNMP version used by a Trap server. Possible values are SNMPv1, SNMPv2c, and SNMPv3.

    NOTE:
    • SNMPv1 and SNMPv2c use community strings for authentication.
    • SNMPv3 supports the authentication and encryption of data. USM users need to be configured to implement data authentication and encryption.
    • For security purposes, SNMPv3 is recommended.

    Type

Indicates the type of alarms sent by the storage system to a Trap server.

    • Parsed: The storage system sends parsed alarms to a Trap server. IDs of all alarms correspond to the same object identifier (OID).
    • Parsed time string: The storage system sends parsed alarms to a Trap server. IDs of all alarms correspond to the same OID. The data type of the alarm occurrence time field is OCTET STRING.
    • Original time string: The storage system sends unparsed original alarms to a Trap server. Both the alarm occurrence time (character string) and alarm clearance time (character string) are of the OCTET STRING data type.
    • All: The storage system sends both parsed and original alarms to a Trap server.

    USM User

Indicates the user account that reports alarms using SNMP.

  3. Set server addresses.

    • Adding a server address
      1. Click Add.

The Add Recipient Server page is displayed on the right.

      2. Configure parameters for the recipient server to be added. Table 1 describes related parameters.

When you click Manage USM User on the right of the Add Recipient Server page, the SNMP Protocol page is displayed.

      3. Click OK.
    • Deleting a server address
      1. Select the desired server address and click Remove.
      2. Confirm your operation as prompted.
    • Modifying a server address
      1. Select the desired server address and click Modify.

The Modify Recipient Server page is displayed on the right.

      2. Modify parameters of the recipient server. Table 1 describes related parameters.
      3. Click OK.
    • Testing a server address

Select the desired server address and click Test to test connectivity between the storage system and the server.
