Completing additional setup tasks

View additional tasks to further customize the configuration of your system.

By completing the initial server setup checklist, you have completed the tasks necessary for your server to function and operate on the most basic level. To further customize the configuration of your system, select any of the following tasks:

Creating a virtual computing environment
When you create a virtual computing environment, you consolidate the physical and logical resources into a manageable virtual environment. This allows you to pool resources such as memory, processors, networks, and storage into a single virtual environment.
Accessing the ASMI
The Advanced System Management Interface (ASMI) is the interface to the service processor that allows you to perform general and administrator-level service tasks such as reading service processor error logs, reading vital product data, setting up the service processor, and controlling the system power. The ASMI might also be referred to as the service processor menus. You can access the ASMI through a Web browser, the ASCII console, or the Hardware Management Console (HMC). If you do not have an HMC, set up access to the ASMI in addition to your Operations Console or twinaxial console.
Setting up Operations Console
Operations Console allows you to use one or more PCs to access and control, either remotely or locally, the server console and control panel functions. Set up Operations Console in addition to your HMC to manage the i5/OS® operating system in a partitioned environment.
Setting up a twinaxial console
The twinaxial console uses the command line interface to access and manage the server, and it does not require the use of a PC to act as a console. Set up the twinaxial console in addition to your HMC to manage the i5/OS operating system in a partitioned environment.
Managing the Thin Console
The Thin Console for System i5™ provides a 5250 system console for the i5/OS operating system on select IBM System i5™ and eServer™ i5 models that are not managed by a Hardware Management Console (HMC).
Installing iSeries™ Navigator
iSeries Navigator is a graphical user interface for managing and administering your server and i5/OS from your Windows® desktop. iSeries Navigator makes operation and administration of servers and i5/OS easier and more productive.
Install and configure Windows environment on iSeries
Windows environment on iSeries is available on IBM System i5 and eServer i5 models. It is a way for the server and Personal Computers (PCs) to work together. It allows the server to control the PCs, making the PCs easier to administer. Setting up Windows environment on iSeries involves installing hardware and two separate pieces of software: IBM® i5/OS Integrated Server Support and the Windows 2000 Server or Windows Server 2003 operating system from Microsoft®.
