Creating a customized initial server setup checklist

Which console will manage i5/OS(TM)?

You can manage servers, logical partitions, and Capacity on Demand with the Hardware Management Console (HMC). The HMC communicates with systems using service applications to detect, consolidate, and send information to your service provider for analysis. The HMC also provides 5250 emulation, which allows you to perform most operating system management tasks through the HMC.

Operations Console is an installable component of iSeries(TM) Access for Windows(R). It allows you to use one or more PCs to access and control, either remotely or locally, the server console and control panel functions. A local console that is directly attached requires that the console PC be connected to the server with the Operations Console cable. A local console on a network (LAN) requires an Ethernet or token-ring connection to the server.

The twinaxial console uses the command line interface to access and manage the server, and it does not require the use of a PC to act as a console. You access the server through a console screen, keyboard, and twinaxial cables. The twinaxial console requires a twinaxial cable connection from a workstation to the server.
