Using the control panel to perform a platform system or service processor dump

A platform system dump or service processor dump is performed when your next level of support or your service provider suspects a wait or loop in the server firmware.

Use this procedure only under the direction of your next level of support or your service provider, after first providing to your next level of support or service provider a dump of the operating system (for example, a main storage dump for i5/OS®).

If you do not have an HMC, follow these steps to perform a platform system or SP™ dump:

  1. Choose from the following options:
    • If you are performing a platform system dump, perform a controlled shutdown of the operating system if possible. Then continue with the next step.
    • If you are performing a service processor dump, continue with the next step.
  2. On the control panel, select Manual mode.
  3. Use the increment or decrement buttons to select one of the following:
    • function 42 (platform system dump)
    • function 43 (service processor dump)
  4. Press Enter on the control panel.
  5. Is 00000000 or FF displayed on the control panel for more than 30 seconds?
    • Yes: The service processor or server firmware is not responding to a request from the control panel. Contact your next level of support or your hardware service provider. This ends the procedure.
    • No: One of the following is displayed:
      • An attention SRC A1xx 3042 is displayed, which indicates that function 42 has been selected.
      • An attention SRC A1xx 3043 is displayed, which indicates that function 43 has been selected.
  6. Reselect function 42 or 43, press Enter on the control panel, switch back to Normal mode, and wait for the dump to complete. If function 42 (platform system dump) was selected, also wait for the system to IPL again.
  7. For details on how to copy, report, or delete a dump after you have completed a dump, refer to Managing dumps.
