Remove and replace the Integrated xSeries Adapter (IXA)

Use these procedures to remove and replace card number 2689 or machine type 1519 model 100 or model 200 card with eServerâ„¢ i5 or eServer p5 server system power on.

To remove and replace the IXA card with system power on, complete the following steps:

  1. Power off the xSeries® server for instructions see, Powering off an expansion unit and then return to these instructions.
  2. Remove alternating current (ac) power cords from the xSeries server.
Note: This system might be equipped with a second power supply. Before continuing with this procedure, ensure that all power sources to the system have been completely disconnected.

    DANGER
When working on or around the system, observe the following precautions:
Electrical voltage and current from power, telephone, and communication cables are hazardous. To avoid a shock hazard:
    • Connect power to this unit only with the IBM provided power cord. Do not use the IBM provided power cord for any other product.
    • Do not open or service any power supply assembly.
    • Do not connect or disconnect any cables or perform installation, maintenance, or reconfiguration of this product during an electrical storm.
    • The product might be equipped with multiple power cords. To remove all hazardous voltages, disconnect all power cords.
    • Connect all power cords to a properly wired and grounded electrical outlet. Ensure that the outlet supplies proper voltage and phase rotation according to the system rating plate.
    • Connect any equipment that will be attached to this product to properly wired outlets.
    • When possible, use one hand only to connect or disconnect signal cables.
    • Never turn on any equipment when there is evidence of fire, water, or structural damage.
    • Disconnect the attached power cords, telecommunications systems, networks, and modems before you open the device covers, unless instructed otherwise in the installation and configuration procedures.
    • Connect and disconnect cables as described in the following procedures when installing, moving, or opening covers on this product or attached devices.
      To Disconnect:
      1. Turn off everything (unless instructed otherwise).

Remove and replace the IXA card by completing the following steps. You might need to refer to your xSeries server information for some of the steps.
  3. Locate the IXA card. The IXA card is plugged into one of the PCI adapter slots on the xSeries server. Which slot is used varies according to the xSeries model.

    IXA card
  4. Label and disconnect all cables and cords attached to the IXA card as follows:
    1. Remove the high-speed link (HSL) cables from the IXA card at port 0 and port 1.
    2. Remove the SPCN Connection Block cable from the IXA card at label J15.
    3. Remove the RS-485 shield cable from the IXA card at label 485.
  5. Record the slot number and location of the IXA card in the xSeries server.
    Attention:
    • Attach a wrist strap to an unpainted metal surface of your hardware to prevent electrostatic discharge from damaging your hardware.
    • When using a wrist strap, follow all electrical safety procedures. A wrist strap is for static control. It does not increase or decrease your risk of receiving electric shock when using or working on electrical equipment.
    • If you do not have a wrist strap, just prior to removing the product from ESD packaging and installing or replacing hardware, touch an unpainted metal surface of the system for a minimum of 5 seconds.
  6. Refer to the xSeries information first to remove, and then to replace, the card, ensuring that the card is plugged into the slot noted in step 5. After the card is installed, return to these instructions.
  7. Reconnect all cables that you labeled in step 4 as follows.
    1. Connect the RS-485 shield cable from the IXA card at label 485.
    2. Connect the SPCN Connection Block cable from the IXA card at label J15.
    3. Connect the high-speed link (HSL) cables from the IXA card at port 0 and port 1.
    4. Connect the alternating current (ac) power cords for the xSeries server
Attention: If the i5 or p5 server is powered on it will automatically power on the xSeries server when the ac power cords are connected.
  8. Power on the i5 or p5 server if it is not already powered on.
  9. Wait for the i5 or p5 server to detect that the IXA card is installed and to turn on the xSeries server.
Important: Do not turn on the xSeries server using the xSeries power switch. Do not turn on the xSeries server using Hardware Service Manager or Hardware Management Consle.
Note: Power-on might take several minutes because the IXA card's SPCN firmware might require automatic update to complete.
  10. Access the Advanced System Management Interface (ASMI). For instructions, see Accessing the Advanced System Management Interface.
  11. After you have accessed the ASMI follow the instructions in Setting expansion unit configuration ID and MTMS value.
Note: Use the identifier number 71 in the first part of the Setting Configuration ID instructions.
  12. Verify that the IXA card is functional. For instructions, see Verify the installed part and select the appropriate procedure.
