Data migration concepts

Review the data migration process and learn the terminology that is used.

Data migration is the movement of data when the software is upgraded or when the data is transferred to a different hardware server or model. In this topic, data migration specifically means moving data or software from one iSeries™ model to an IBM System i5™ or eServer™ i5 model.

The data migration process includes planning, ordering, preparing for, and performing the data migration. Planning might require up to six weeks, depending on the complexity of your environment. Installing the SUSE Linux® Enterprise Server 9 or i5/OS® release V5R4 on the source server requires at least one hour. Migrating the data from the source server to the target server can normally be accomplished within 3 days.

Review the following information to become familiar with the terminology used to describe data migrations. If you are moving from one iSeries server, hardware feature, or software version to a new server, hardware feature, or software version and retaining the same server serial number, see Upgrade terminology.

source server
The existing server from which data is being migrated to a new level of software.
target server
The planned hardware configuration and software level that exists after the data migration is completed.
Tip: In some information center topics, such as the Logical partitioning topics, the target server is referred to as the managed system.
