Completing the data migration from i5/OS V5R3 or OS/400 V5R2 or V5R1

If you cannot load i5/OS® V5R4 on your source server, use these instructions. This task describes how to complete the data migration from a server running i5/OS V5R3 or OS/400® V5R2 or V5R1 to a target server.

Before you begin these tasks, complete the tasks in Preparing for data migration from i5/OS V5R3 or OS/400 V5R2 or V5R1.

Note: If you did not get a new server with feature code 0205, follow steps 1 through 33 in the topic "Restoring previous release user data to a new server: Step-by-step instructions" in Chapter 14 of the Backup and Recovery Guide Link to PDF to install the Licensed Internal Code and OS/400 on the target server. When you have completed these steps, continue with step 8 in this topic.

If your target server is set up and is running with only the Licensed Internal Code and OS/400 installed (feature code 0205), do the following steps:

  1. Sign on to the target server as user QSECOFR. You do not need to enter a password at this time.
  2. At the IPL Options display, enter the correct date and time. Verify that the following values are set as shown:
Start to system to restricted state = Y
Define or change system at IPL = Y
Set major system options = Y

  3. On the Set Major System Options display, select N to not enable automatic configuration.
  4. On the Define or Change the System at IPL display, complete the following:
    1. Select option 3 (System Value Commands).
    2. On the System Value Commands display, select option 3 (Work with System Values).
    3. On the Work with System Values display, enter 2 to change the following system values:
      • Change QALWOBJRST to *ALL (Allow all object restore options).
      • Change QIPLTYPE to 2 (Attended IPL, console in debug mode).
      • Change QJOBMSGQFL to *PRTWRAP (Wrap the job message queue and print the messages that are being overlaid because of wrapping).
      • Change QJOBMSGQMX to a minimum of 30 (Job message queue maximum size of 30 MB).
      • Change QPFRADJ to 2 (Performance adjustment at IPL and automatic adjustment).
      • Change QVFYOBJRST to 1 (Do not verify signatures on restore. Restore all objects regardless of their signature).
    4. After the server changes the system values, press F3 (Exit) twice to return to the Define or Change the System at IPL display.
  5. On the Define or Change the System at IPL display, press F3 to exit and continue the IPL.
  6. On the Change Password display, enter QSECOFR as the current password. Enter a new password. Reenter the password to verify and press Enter.
  7. Perform steps 25 through 33 in the topic "Restoring previous release user data to a new system: Step-by-step instructions" in Chapter 14 of the Backup and Recovery Guide Link to PDF.
  8. If a controller or device no longer has a valid resource on the server, follow the steps in the Fix hardware resource names topic in the iSeries™ information center to make the necessary corrections.
  9. Install the licensed programs (LPs). For more information, see the Installing additional licensed programs topic in the iSeries Information Center.
  10. Follow the steps in the Checklist: Completing the upgrade or replacement in the iSeries Information Center.
  11. Add job scheduler entries using the Add Job Schedule Entry (ADDJOBSCDE) command and the information you printed from your source server.
  12. If you installed Windows® Server for iSeries on your server, and you saved your server with the Integrated xSeries® Server in a varied off setting, follow these steps:
    1. Add the links for the server descriptions. Enter the following for each server description:
      ADDNWSSTGL NWSSTG (storage_name) NWSD (server_description)
    2. Vary on your Integrated xSeries Server by entering WRKCFGSTS *NWS and selecting option 1.
  13. Print your server configuration information as follows:
    1. On an i5/OS command line, enter PRTSYSINF (Print System Information), and then print the resulting spooled file.

This prints reports of the hardware resources, software resources, system values, installed fixes (also called program temporary fixes or PTFs), and other configuration information.

    2. Print a new server configuration list and keep this list for future reference.
    3. On an i5/OS command line, enter WRKDEVD, and enter option 6 to print the device descriptions.
    4. On an i5/OS command line, enter WRKCTLD, and enter option 6 to print the controller descriptions.
    5. If you have a partitioned server, print the server configuration for logical partitions using the Start System Service Tools (STRSST) command. For more information about printing the server configuration for logical partitions, see Print server configuration for logical partitions in the iSeries Information Center.
  14. Save the entire server using option 21 of the GO SAVE command. For more information, see the GO SAVE topic in the iSeries information center. Specify the following options:
    1. Vary off the network server...*ALL
    2. Unmount file systems..........Y
Note: It is recommended that you have two copies of the backup media.
  15. Resume normal operations and verify that all your applications run properly.
  16. Tune the server performance. This ensures that your servers make the best use of the server resources, and allows workloads to run as efficiently as possible. For details, see the Tune performance topic in the iSeries information center.
