Managing the Thin Console
The Thin Console provides a 5250 emulation session as a console for an i5/OS(R) logical partition for only the following servers, when they are not managed by the Hardware Management Console (HMC): the IBM System i5(TM) and eServer(R) i5 models 9405-520, 9406-520, and 9406-550. The Thin Console directly connects to the server by using one of the HMC ports and is configured in i5/OS as an HMC that is using all virtual resources.

Additions to the information center include general technical updates in the existing information about your IBM server hardware. Also, some information has been consolidated or redesigned to make it easier to find and use.

What's new as of 31 January 2006

The information center now includes information about the following new models:

To view a list of models that includes the machine type-model (MTM) name, the full name, the short name, and the brand or family for each model, see List of model numbers and names.

Upgrading your HMC machine code
Learn how to upgrade the Hardware Management Console (HMC) software from one release to the next while maintaining your HMC configuration data.

Managing the Integrated Virtualization Manager
The Integrated Virtualization Manager is a browser-based system management interface that you can use to manage IBM System p5 and eServer(R) pSeries servers that use the IBM Virtual I/O Server on a management partition. On the managed system, you can create logical partitions, manage the virtual storage and virtual Ethernet, and view service information related to the server.

Clustering systems using InfiniBand hardware
Now you can use InfiniBand adapters and InfiniBand switches to cable and configure your systems in cluster configurations. Use the new InfiniBand adapters to connect your system to an InfiniBand switch or fabric.

New documentation offers you the technical information and instructions you need to enable clustering servers using InfiniBand products. If you use the Hardware Management Console (HMC), you can use the IBM Network Manager and have integrated help information available any time you perform a related task. If the need arises, service providers can use new diagnostic procedures to aid in diagnosing and resolving network problems. A good place to start is Planning for InfiniBand (IB) Networks

Learning and tutorials
Select from several e-Learning courses and tutorials that can help you learn more about server virtualization.

Quick start guides
The information center includes printable versions of the Quick start guide that is included with your server. The Quick start guide offers an abbreviated set of instructions designed to help you quickly unpack and set up your server. Quick start guides are included with the following servers:

To find the Quick start guide for your server, see Using predefined initial server setup checklists and select the checklist that best fits your needs.

Partitioning your server
Partitioning your server now includes information about using the Logical Partition Manager and the i5/OS(TM) Virtual Partition Manager.

Partitioning with Virtual Partition Manager
Use the i5/OS Virtual Partition Manager to create and manage up to four Linux(R) logical partitions from a single i5/OS logical partition on an IBM eServer i5 server.

Partitioning with Logical Partitioning Manager
Use Logical Partition Manager, a browser-based system management interface, to create logical partitions on a single managed system, manage the virtual storage and virtual Ethernet on the managed system, and view service information related to the managed system.

Search anywhere
The enhanced search functions enable you to search using the Internet or an installed version of the information center.

Setting up connectivity to service and support
The Customer service, support, troubleshooting topic now includes instructions to help you set up your connection to service and support. Use this information to find out about setting up connectivity to service and support for AIX(R), i5/OS, Linux, and your Hardware Management Console environment.

Special planning considerations for write cache I/O adapters
The Solution planning topic now includes a section to help you plan and implement a data integrity solution that uses auxiliary write cache I/O adapters. Auxiliary write cache I/O adapters enhance data integrity and continuity by providing two complete non-volatile copies of write cache data.
