Questo argomento mostra esempi di ciascun menu SMS (system management services) e spiega come ciascuna opzione di menu facilita la gestione del sistema.
Se non sono state eseguite le operazioni descritte in Avvio delle funzioni del pannello di controllo, prima di procedere, tornare indietro e seguire la procedura corretta per il proprio sistema.
La tabella che segue contiene i titoli dei menu o delle attività a cui è possibile accedere nell'applicazione SMS. Utilizzarla per accedere e riesaminare l'attività specifica desiderata.

| Adapter Configuration | Consente di impostare la velocità di rete, attivare o disattivare l'estensione dell'albero ed impostare il protocollo. |
| Speed, Duplex | Permette di impostare la velocità di interfaccia utilizzata dalla scheda e di selezionare half o full duplex. |
| Spanning Tree Enabled | Permette di abilitare o disabilitare l'indicatore di estensione dell'albero. |
| Protocol | Permette di impostare il protocollo appropriato per la rete. |
| Ping Test | Permette di verificare un collegamento di rete dell'adattatore a un sistema remoto. |
| Change SCSI Settings | Permette di visualizzare e modificare gli indirizzi delle unità di controllo SCSI collegate al sistema. |
| Select Console | Permette di selezionare la console da utilizzare per la visualizzazione dei menu SMS. |
| Select Boot Options | Permette di visualizzare e impostare le diverse opzioni relative alle unità di installazione e di avvio. Il menu Select boot options fornisce le seguenti opzioni: Select Install or Boot Device, Select Boot Devices, Multiboot Startup |
| Normal Mode Boot or Service Mode Boot | Permette di far eseguire al sistema un avvio in modalità normale o di servizio. |
| Hard Drive | Visualizza un menu che identifica i diversi tipi di unità fissa installati sul sistema. Ad esempio, SCSI o SSA. |
| Set Boot Sequence | Permette di impostare l'ubicazione dell'unità nell'elenco di avvio. Le opzioni possibili sono: Display current settings, Restore default settings, Multiboot startup e Exiting system management services |
Su tutti i menu tranne che su quello principale (main menu), sono presenti diversi tasti di navigazione:
Se viene immessa una X, viene richiesto di confermare la scelta di uscire dai menu SMS e di avviare il sistema operativo.
Se ci sono più pagine di informazioni da visualizzare, sono presenti altri due tasti di navigazione:
Su ciascun menu, viene fornita la possibilità di scegliere una voce di menu e di premere Invio (se applicabile) o di selezionare un tasto di navigazione.
Questa opzione permette di modificare la lingua utilizzata dai menu SMS.

Questa opzione permette di abilitare e configurare la funzione di avvio remoto del server o partizione. Inizialmente viene visualizzato un elenco degli adattatori NIC (network interface card) nel server. Segue un esempio di questo menu:

Per modificare i parametri IP, immettere il numero di parametri per cui si desidera modificare il valore. L'immissione dei parametri IP su questo menu aggiorna automaticamente i parametri sul pannello della verifica del ping (Ping Test).

L'opzione Select Console permette di selezionare la console da utilizzare per la visualizzazione dei menu SMS. Questa selezione riguarda solo i menu SMS e non influisce sulla console utilizzata dal sistema operativo.
Seguire le istruzioni visualizzate sul menu. Il firmware ritorna automaticamente al menu sul quale gli indicatori POST (memoria, tastiera, rete, SCSI, altoparlante) vengono visualizzati sulla parte inferiore. Premere il tasto numerico 1 dopo la visualizzazione della parola tastiera (keyboard) e prima della parola altoparlante (speaker) per ritornare al menu principale SMS.
Utilizzare questo menu per visualizzare e impostare le diverse opzioni relative alle unità di installazione e di avvio.

E' possibile quindi selezionare l'unità appropriata per questa installazione o avvio.
Se si dispone di un server 911x-xxx , il firmware del sistema rilasciato in 01SF235 o versioni successive supporta un'opzione di avvio multiplo, che consente di avere su un disco fisso due sistemi operativi avviabili. Se il firmware di sistema rileva due immagini di sistema operativo avviabili su un'unità, il menu precedente avrà una visualizzazione diversa, come mostrato nel seguente esempio:

In questo menu, part= indica la partizione a cui appartiene questa istanza del sistema operativo. Se il sistema operativo supporta una partizione boot-info (info di avvio), il valore di tale partizione viene visualizzato dopo il numero della partizione. In questo esempio, il valore della partizione boot-info (info di avvio) è AIX 5.3.0. Linux non supporta una partizione boot-info (info di avvio), pertanto il campo tra le due parentesi dopo il numero della partizione è vuoto. Se un'unità non supporta più di un'istanza di un sistema operativo, il numero partizione e il campo descrizione nella partizione boot-info (info di avvio) vengono visualizzati se disponibili.
Quando viene selezionata un'unità per l'installazione del sistema operativo, o da cui avviarla, tramite il menu Select Task è possibile ottenere le informazioni sull'unità o effettuare l'avvio da quella unità in modalità normale o di servizio. Di seguito viene riportato un esempio di questo menu.

Per visualizzare contemporaneamente tutte le unità potenzialmente avviabili invece di attraversare tutta la gerarchia con i sottomenu, andare al menu Select Device Type o al menu Select Media Type e selezionare l'ultima opzione, List All Devices.
La funzione List All Devices può richiedere un lungo periodo di tempo su un sistema di ampie dimensioni con molte unità e adattatori I/E, ad esempio ampie schiere di dischi.
Selezionare Select Boot Devices per visualizzare e modificare l'elenco di avvio personalizzato, cioè la sequenza di unità lette all'avvio.

Questa opzione reimposta l'elenco di avvio sull'elenco di avvio predefinito. L'elenco di avvio predefinito varia a seconda delle unità installate nel sistema.
L'elenco di avvio predefinito è:
L'opzione Multiboot Startup attiva/disattiva l'indicatore di avvio multiplo che controlla se richiamare il menu Multiboot automaticamente all'avvio.
Una volta terminato l'utilizzo di SMS, immettere una x (uscita) per avviare il sistema o la partizione.
