MABIP54

Use this procedure to isolate the failing PCI I/O adapter card from a reference code with a Direct Select Address when the serviceable event view does not indicate a location for the PCI card.

  1. Determine the PCI bridge set (multi-adapter bridge domain) by performing the following:
    1. Record the bus number (BBBB), the multi-adapter bridge number (C), and the multi-adapter bridge function number (c) from the Direct Select Address (DSA) (see Breaking down a RIO/HSL/12X or PCI bus reference code for help in determining these values).
    2. Using the bus number and the System Configuration Listing, or by asking the customer, determine which unit the bus is located in and record that unit type.
    3. The PCI bridge set is the group of card positions controlled by the same multi-adapter bridge on the bus that you recorded. Use the System Configuration Listing, the Card positions table for the unit type that you recorded, the bus number, and the multi-adapter bridge number to determine in which PCI bridge set the failure occurred.
    4. Using the card position table, record the PCI bridge set card positions, and the multi-adapter bridge function numbers.
    5. Examine the PCI bridge set and record the information on the form for all of the positions with IOP and IOA cards installed in them.
  2. Perform the following:
    1. Power off the system or partition.
    2. Remove all the IOAs in the PCI bridge set identified in step 1. Be sure to record the card position of each IOA so that you can reinstall it in the same position later. To determine the remove and replace procedures for the IOAs, locate the IOA card positions in Locating FRUs for the frame type that you recorded.
    3. Power on the system or partition.
Does the reference code or failure that sent you to this procedure occur?
  3. Perform the following:
    1. Power off the system or partition.
    2. Exchange the IOP that is indicated in the DSA. Be sure to record the card position of the IOP so that you can reinstall it in the same position later. To determine the exchange procedure for the IOP, locate the IOP's card position in Locating FRUs for the frame type you recorded.
    3. Power on the system or partition.
Does the reference code or failure that sent you to this procedure occur?
  4. Perform the following:
    1. Power off the system or partition.
    2. Install all of the IOAs that you removed in step 2. Be sure to install them in their original positions.
    3. Power on the system or partition.
Does the reference code or failure that sent you to this procedure occur?
  5. Perform the following:
    1. Power off the system or partition.
    2. Remove all of the IOAs in the PCI bridge set identified in step 1. Be sure to record the card position of each IOA so that you can reinstall it in the same position later.
    3. Remove the IOP that you exchanged and install the original IOP in its original position. Continue with the next step.
  6. Perform the following:
    1. Reinstall, in its original position, one of the IOAs that you removed.
    2. Power on the system or partition.
Does the reference code or failure that sent you to this procedure occur?
  7. Perform the following:
    1. Power off the system or partition.
    2. Replace the I/O adapter card that you last installed. Be sure to install the new I/O adapter card in the same position.
    3. Power on the system or partition.
Does the reference code or failure that sent you to this procedure occur?
  8. Perform the following:
    1. Power off the system or partition.
    2. Reinstall, in their original positions, the remaining I/O adapter cards that you removed.
    3. Power on the system or partition.
Does the reference code or failure that sent you to this procedure occur?
  9. Does a different reference code occur?
  10. The problem is the multi-adapter bridge. Perform the following:
    1. Power off the system or partition.
    2. If you have not already done so, replace the I/O backplane in the failing enclosure.
    3. Install the original IOP in its original position.
    4. Install all of the other IOPs and IOAs into their original positions. Do not install the IOAs that you were instructed to remove in step 2.
    5. Power on the system or partition.
Does the reference code or failure that sent you to this procedure occur?
  11. Perform the following:
    1. Power off the system or partition.
    2. Install all of the IOAs that you removed in step 2. Be sure to install them in their original positions.
    3. Power on the system or partition.
Does the reference code or failure that sent you to this procedure occur?
