Add a redundant service processor assembly

Use this procedure to add redundant service processor assembly.

  1. Only disconnect the AC power from the nodes that contain a Service Processor Assembly.

Use this procedure to service the Service Processor Assembly and Time-Of-Day Battery.

When the state of the managed system changes to Power Off, disconnect the AC power source from each node installed in the managed system that contains a Service Processor Assembly.

Only disconnect the AC power from the nodes that contain a Service Processor Assembly.

ATTENTION: Disconnecting the AC power from nodes that do not contain a Service Processor Assembly may cause this service action to fail.

  2. Install the Time-Of-Day Battery

If a time-of-day battery (A) is not present, install one in the new service processor assembly.

  3. Install the Service Processor Assembly
    1. Align the service processor assembly with the card slot.
    2. Slide the service processor assembly all the way into the card slot in the card enclosure.
    3. Push the handle (A) towards the service processor assembly until the release tab locks the handle in place. This will secure the service processor assembly into the card slot.
    4. Reconnect all service processor assembly cables.
  4. Restore Network Connectivity

The installed Service Processor must connect to the network to be accessible from the HMC.

How will the IP Address of the Service Processor be managed?
Configure a static IP Address Obtain an IP Address automatically from a DHCP server
V Go to step Add a redundant service processor assembly
  5. Plug In Top Fsp Enclosure
Connect the AC power source to the top enclosure.
  6. Plug In Second Fsp Enclosure
Connect the AC power source to the second enclosure.
  7. To configure the PC or mobile computer to access ASMI:

The Advanced System Management Interface (ASMI) will be used to configure the new Service Processor. A PC or mobile computer must be connected to the Service Processor to access ASMI.

To configure the PC or mobile computer to access ASMI

    1. Connect an Ethernet cable from the PC or mobile computer to the Ethernet port labeled HMC1, or the Ethernet port labeled HMC2 on the Service Processor being serviced.
    2. Configure the Ethernet interface on the PC or mobile computer to an IP address and subnet mask within the same subnet as the server, so that your PC or mobile computer can communicate with the Service Processor.

Use the following table to help determine these values:

      Service
      Processor
connector IP address Subnet mask Gateway address

      HMC1 192.168.2.1 255.255.255.0 192.168.2.1
      HMC2 192.168.3.1 255.255.255.0 192.168.3.1

For example, if you connected your PC or mobile computer to HMC1, the IP address for your PC or mobile computer could be 192.168.2.1 and the subnet mask would be 255.255.255.0. Set the gateway IP address to the same IP address as the PC or mobile computer.

  8. To connect to the ASMI:

To configure the Service Processor you must connect to the Advanced System Management Interface (ASMI).

    To connect to the ASMI

    1. Type the ASMI address in the Address field of your PC's or mobile computer's Web browser.
    2. When the login display appears, enter one of the following default user IDs and passwords:
      User ID Password
      admin admin
    3. Change the default password when prompted
  9. To configure the Service Processor's static IP Address:
Configure the Service Processor's static IP Address.

To configure the Service Processor's static IP Address

    1. From the navigation area, expand Network Services.
    2. Click Network Configuration.
    3. If your service processor connects to the network using a static IP address on Ethernet port HMC1, fill in the section labeled Network interface eth0.

If your service processor connects to the network using a static IP address on Ethernet port HMC2 , fill in the section labeled Network interface eth1.

    4. Ensure that the following fields are filled in correctly:
      Field Value
      Configure this
      interface? Yes
      Type of IP address Static
      IP address The service
                           Processor's
                           static IP address
      Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
    5. Click Continue and verify your settings on the Network Configuration panel.
    6. Click Save Settings to complete the static IP Address configuration.
  10. Unplug Fsp Enclosure
Disconnect the AC power source from the enclosure.
  11. Note:
If you can not access the ASMI. or if the system will not power-on, after exchanging a service processor assembly, you might have a server firmware level problem. If the new service processor assembly contains an earlier release of server firmware than you were using, it might not support your current hardware configuration. You will need to update your server firmware using the USB port on the service processor assembly. Refer to Using the USB port on the service processor to update firmware.
  12. Verify the repair.

    Go to Verifying a repair.
