Fan

Use this procedure to service the fan.

  1. You may service the fan concurrently or non-concurrently.

To service the fan concurrently, begin with Step 2. Otherwise, begin with Step 3.

  2. The fan will be serviced concurrently.

Do not remove power from the unit containing the FRU during this procedure. Continue with Step 4.

  3. The fan will be serviced non-concurrently.

Remove power from the enclosure containing the FRU. Powering off the enclosure is accomplished through the enclosure's host server. For additional information, refer to the "Powering on and powering off" topic located in the host server's service guide.

  4. Attention:

Failure to follow the step-by-step sequence for this FRU removal and/or installation may result in FRU or system damage.

Use the following precautions whenever you handle electronic components or cables.

    • Attach a wrist strap to an unpainted metal surface of your hardware to prevent electrostatic discharge from damaging your hardware.
    • If you do not have a wrist strap, just prior to removing the product from ESD packaging and installing or replacing hardware, touch an unpainted metal surface of the system for a minimum of 5 seconds.
    • Keep all electronic components in the shipping container or envelope until you are ready to install them.
    • If you remove, then re-install an electronic component, temporarily place the component on an ESD pad or blanket, if available.

  5. Remove the front bezel.

    1. To release the front bezel, simultaneously press in both bezel-release tabs (A).
    2. Note: To ensure the bezel does not become damaged, use extra caution when pulling it away from the chassis.

    3. Pull the bottom of the bezel up and away from the subsystem chassis.

  6. Remove the fan.

    1. Press down on the handle (A) of the failing fan unit to release it from its slot in the system unit.
    2. Pull gently on the fan handle until the fan is dislodged from the system.
    3. Grasp the front of the fan and pull it out from the system unit, supporting the bottom of the fan while you do this.

  7. Install the fan.

    1. Align the fan with its slot in the system unit.
    2. Gently push the fan into the system unit.
    3. Press the fan to ensure that it is completely seated. The fan starts to run when it is correctly installed.

  8. Install the front bezel.

    1. Align the front bezel around the front of the enclosure.
    2. Note: To ensure the tabs do not become damaged, use extra caution when replacing the bezel.

    3. Gently push the bezel-release tabs (A) into the slots until the bezel is seated against the front of the subsystem.

  9. If you serviced the fan non-concurrently, power on the enclosure.

Power on the enclosure containing the FRU. Powering on the enclosure is accomplished through the enclosure's host server. For additional information, refer to the "Powering on and powering off" topic located in the host server's service guide.
