Learn how to remove a power supply with the system power
on to replace a failing power supply or as a part of another service
action.
If
your system is managed by the Hardware Management Console (HMC), you can use the HMC
to complete the steps for removing a power supply. For instructions,
see Removing a part using the Hardware Management Console.
To
remove a power supply from a system that is not managed by an HMC
while the system power is on, complete the following steps:
- Complete the prerequisite tasks described
in Before you begin.
- On a rack-mounted system unit, open the front rack door.
- Remove the front cover, as described
in Removing the front cover from a rack-mounted
model or Removing
the front cover from a stand-alone model.
- Identify the power supply that needs
to be replaced, as described in Identifying
a failing part.
- Disconnect the power cable (A) from
the front of the power supply as shown in Figure 1.
- Attach the wrist strap.
Attention: - Attach a wrist strap to an unpainted metal surface of your hardware
to prevent electrostatic discharge (ESD) from damaging your hardware.
- When using a wrist strap, follow all electrical safety procedures.
A wrist strap is for static control. It does not increase or decrease
your risk of receiving electric shock when using or working on electrical
equipment.
- If you do not have a wrist strap, just prior to removing the product
from ESD packaging and installing or replacing hardware, touch an
unpainted metal surface of the system for a minimum of 5 seconds.
- Push down on the locking latch (B) as
shown in Figure 1,
and then use the locking handle to pull the power supply out of the
system.
