Preparing the logical partition to connect

Learn how to set up your IBM® i logical partition so that it can communicate with the Hardware Management Console (HMC) 5250 console.

To connect to a 5250 console using the HMC, you must first create an IBM i logical partition with some specific profile properties. To set up an IBM i logical partition's properties so that you can connect to a 5250 console, do the following:
  1. In the navigation area, expand the Server and Partition folder.
  2. Select Server Management.
  3. In the contents area, open the server on which the logical partition is located.
  4. Open Partitions.
  5. Right-click the logical partition profile and select Configuration > Manage Profiles.
  6. Select the profile you want to work with and select Actions > Edit > Tagged I/O.
  7. Select the Use HMC console check box and click OK.
The logical partition is now ready to be powered on and connected to the HMC 5250 console.
If your partition is already powered on, you can verify the current console settings by doing the following:
  1. In the navigation area, expand the Server and Partition folder.
  2. Select Server Management.
  3. In the contents area, open the server on which the logical partition is located.
  4. Open Partitions.
  5. Right-click the logical partition profile and select Configuration > Manage Profiles.
  6. Select the profile you want to work with and select Actions > Edit > Tagged I/O.
  7. Verify that the Use HMC console check box is selected, and click OK.
