Backup Dialog

Use this window to back up hard disk information on the Hardware Management Console (HMC).

The HMC data stored on the HMC hard drive can be saved to a DVD-RAM or USB flash memory device on a local system, a remote system mounted to the HMC file system (such as NFS), or sent to a remote site using File Transfer Protocol (FTP).

To back up the HMC, you must have access as an operator, super administrator, or service representative.

Back up the HMC after you make changes to the HMC or to the information associated with logical partitions. In the case of a non-recoverable hard disk failure, the HMC needs to be reinstalled from the HMC recovery CD.

As a part of this reinstallation, you may be prompted to insert the back up media to restore the HMC to the state that existed at the time of the last backup or access the remote restore functions.

Notes:

1. Do not power off the HMC while a back up task is running.
2. You cannot have more than one instance of the back up task running. This includes any scheduled HMC backup operations.

You may receive a system message that the task cannot complete.

• If the back up task ends abnormally due to HMC problems, for example, as a result of an HMC power off, this condition will be cleared within 24 hours, when you can try the task again.
• This error, or "lock" condition, exists when a back up task is already running, a scheduled back up task is in progress, or the HMC lost power during a back up task.
• To bypass this condition, you can use the restricted shell command

  bkconsdata -r none

  to allow you to retry the task immediately, or you can reboot the HMC.
