Requirements for partition migration
Requirements include, but are not limited to:
-
The destination system and the source system must have compatible firmware, processors, and
LMB (logical memory block) size (the smallest chunk of memory that can be assigned to a partition).
- All required external I/O devices must be connected to the migrating partition through the Virtual I/O Server when performing an active migration.
- The
destination system and the source system must have common access (SAN and LAN) to the same
disks and networks.
- The destination system must have sufficient resources available to host the migrating
partition.
- The PowerVM Enterprise Edition activation code is enabled on both the source and the destination systems.
- The source and destination systems are at the appropriate hardware levels and are compatible for partition
migration.
- The source and destination systems each have at least one Virtual I/O Server logical partition that provides
virtual SCSI, virtual Ethernet, and virtual fiber channel to the migrating partition.
-
If the source system is managed by one HMC and the destination system is managed by a different HMC, verify that the secure shell (SSH) authentication keys are set up correctly between the HMC that manages the source server and the HMC that manages the destination server.
To ensure that your source and destination systems meet these requirements, see the Preparing the systems for Partition Mobility topic in the IBM Systems Hardware information center.
Requirements for migrating a shared memory partition include:
- The destination system must support Active Memory Sharing.
- A shared memory pool configured with paging VIOS partition(s) must be available on the target destination system.
- For active logical partition migration, a paging space device suitable for the migrating partition must be available on the destination's shared memory pool.
- For active logical partition migration, a redundant paging space device suitable for migrating a partition must be available. A non-redundant paging space device will not meet the requirement for an active logical partition.
- The shared memory pool must be large enough to provide the entitlement memory required for the migrating partition.
