Alternate Console Device

Use this page to select the alternate console device that is associated with this partition profile. You can use this device to control the logical partition that is associated with this partition profile if the primary console device becomes unavailable.

You are not required to select an alternate console device.

The alternate console is used only if the console device and the alternate console device are both twinaxial consoles. If the logical partition uses another type of console device, you will use other recovery methods if the console fails. For example, if you use 5250 emulation on your Hardware Management Console (HMC) and your current HMC fails, you can replace the HMC and start a new console session with the new HMC. If you use Operations Console, you can either switch to HMC 5250 emulation or use the takeover and recovery function to switch to different hardware.

You can designate either an I/O processor (IOP) or an I/O adapter (IOA) as your alternate console device. Designate an IOP as the alternate console device only if the IOP controls only one IOA that uses the asynchronous communications protocol.

This page displays only devices that you selected for the partition profile on the I/O page. If the device that you want to use as the alternate console device does not display on this page, click Back until you return to the I/O page, select the alternate console device for this partition profile, and click Next until you return to this page.
