Physical I/O
This page lists all of the physical I/O slots that are currently in your managed system. Use this page to add physical I/O devices to the partition profile and remove physical I/O devices from the partition profile.
- When you specify that an I/O device is required, then you cannot activate the logical partition if the I/O device is unavailable or in use by another logical partition.
- When you specify that an I/O device is desired, this means that the I/O device is optional. If the desired I/O device is available when you activate the partition profile, the managed system commits the I/O device to the logical partition. If the desired I/O device is not available, the managed system skips the I/O device.
The list contains a description of the I/O adapter in each I/O slot if an operating system has read the I/O adapters and reported the information to the HMC.
To add an I/O device to the partition profile, select the slot and click either Add as required or Add as desired. The Added column indicates whether the I/O device is required or desired. You can change whether a device is required or desired by selecting the slot and click either Add as required or Add as desired.
To remove an I/O device from the partition profile, select the slot and click Remove.
To display the properties of any of the I/O devices in this area, click the slot ID for the I/O device.
For each I/O device, this area lists the following information:
- Unit
This column displays the name of the unit in which each I/O device is located.
- Bus
This column displays the name of the bus in which each I/O device is located.
- Slot
This column displays the name of the slot in which each I/O device is located.
- Added
This column displays whether each I/O device is assigned to the partition profile. Required indicates that the I/O device is assigned as required, and Desired indicates that the I/O device is assigned as desired. If this column is blank, the I/O device is not assigned to the partition profile.
- Description
This column displays a description of the I/O device in each slot.
If the I/O device is an I/O processor (IOP), this description is either PCI I/O Processor or I/O Processor.
If the slot is empty, this description is Empty slot.
Otherwise, the page uses the first description it finds in the following hierarchy.
- Description of the custom card identification number (CCIN)
- Description of the feature code
- Description of the Peripheral Component Interface (PCI) class code
- Unknown
- Location code
This column displays the location code that describes the location of each I/O device on your managed system.
Changes to whether an I/O device is required or desired take effect immediately. Any other change that you make on this page takes effect only after you shut down the logical partition and reactivate this partition profile.
