Create/Modify Shared Memory Pool Wizard - Paging VIOS
A Virtual I/O Server (VIOS) can act as a paging VIOS partition.
A paging VIOS partition provides access to paging space devices for logical partitions that use memory from the shared memory pool.
You can assign up to two paging VIOS partitions to the shared memory pool.
When you assign two paging VIOS partitions to the shared memory pool, you must configure both paging VIOS partitions to access
the same paging space device.
This redundant configuration ensures that if one paging VIOS partition becomes unavailable,
the other paging VIOS partition can retrieve the data on the paging space device.
Before you assign a paging VIOS partition to the shared memory pool, complete the following steps:
- Verify that there is only one paging VIOS partition currently assigned to the shared memory pool.
- Verify that the paging VIOS partition that is currently assigned to the shared memory pool is running.
- Verify that the Virtual I/O Server logical partition that you plan to assign to the shared memory pool
is running.
When you assign a paging VIOS partition to the shared memory pool and both paging VIOS partitions
have access to the same paging space devices, those paging space devices become common.
You can modify the paging VIOS partitions that are assigned to the shared memory pool.
However, before you modify the paging VIOS partitions that are assigned to the shared memory pool, complete the following steps:
- Shut down all of the shared memory partitions that use the paging VIOS partition (that you plan to change)
as the primary paging VIOS partition.
- Shut down all of the shared memory partitions that use the paging VIOS partition (that you plan to change)
as the secondary paging VIOS partition.
- Verify that the Virtual I/O Server logical partition that you plan to assign to the shared memory pool
as a paging VIOS partition is running.
You can also remove a paging VIOS partition from the shared memory pool.
However, before you remove a paging VIOS partition from the shared memory pool, you must complete the following steps:
- Verify that there are two paging VIOS partitions currently assigned to the shared memory pool.
- Shut down all of the shared memory partitions that use the paging VIOS partition (that you plan to remove) as the
primary paging VIOS partition.
- Shut down all of the shared memory partitions that use the paging VIOS partition (that you plan to remove) as the
secondary paging VIOS partition.
Use this panel to assign at least one paging VIOS partition to the shared memory pool
or to add, modify, or remove a paging VIOS partition from the shared memory pool.
