Modifying IP addresses

Use the Modify IP Address panel in the SAN Volume Controller Console to change the IP addresses that are associated with the cluster.

Introduction

If you change the cluster IP address, the cluster stops serving Web pages that use the old IP address. You must use the new IP address to reconnect your Web browser to the cluster. When you reconnect to the cluster, accept the new site certificate.

If you plan to convert the cluster from IPv4 to IPv6, or vice versa, complete these steps to ensure that you do not lose the connection to your cluster during the conversion:
  1. Select the Cluster Ethernet Port 1 for the IPv4 cluster, and select Modify Port Settings from the task list for the Cluster Ethernet Port 1 and click Go.
  2. On the Modify Port Settings panel, update the IPv4 address to the new IPv6 address and click OK.
  3. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 for the Cluster Ethernet Port 2, if it is configured.
  4. Remove the cluster with the old IP address. Use the Remove a Cluster panel to complete this task. To access the Remove a Cluster panel, return to the Viewing Cluster panel and select Remove a Cluster from the task list.
  5. Verify that the cluster is available on the new IP address by issuing a ping command with the new IP address. A successful ping indicates that the cluster is available at the new IP address.
  6. Add the cluster with the new address. Use the Add a Cluster panel to complete this task. To access the Add a Cluster panel, return to the Viewing Cluster panel and select Add a Cluster from the task list.
  7. On the Modify IP Address panel, remove the old IP addresses for the cluster. Depending on the IP type that you are removing, select either the Cluster Ethernet Port for the IPv4 or IPv6 settings and select Clear Port Settings from the task list and click Go. The cluster is only available from the new address.

Attributes

The following attributes are displayed for IPv4 cluster IP settings:

Select
Allows you to select the cluster Ethernet port to use to complete an action from the task list.
Cluster Ethernet Port
Displays the port number for the Ethernet connection to the cluster. SAN Volume Controller supports two Ethernet ports to provide redundancy.
IP Address
Displays the IP address of the cluster.
Service IP Address
Displays either the static IP address that was defined for the service IP or DHCP, which indicates that the service IP address is dynamically generated by a DHCP server.
Note: If you do not select a service IP address, the SAN Volume Controller selects DHCP to automatically assign a service IP address.
The service IP address is used if the node needs to be started after it has been removed from the cluster.
Subnet Mask
Displays the subnet mask of the cluster. Subnet masks are only valid for IPv4 addresses.
Gateway
Displays the IP address for the default gateway for the cluster.

The following attributes are displayed for IPv6 cluster IP settings:

The SAN Volume Controller Console supports the following IPv6 formats:
  • Eight colon-separated groups of four hexadecimal digits; for example, 1234:1234:abcd:0123:0000:0000:7689:6576
  • Eight colon-separated groups of hexadecimal digits with leading zeros omitted; for example, 1234:1234:abcd:123:0:0:7689:6576
  • Zero suppression format; for example, 1234:1234:abcd:123::7689:6576
Note: You can only suppress one set of zeros in an address.
Service IP Address
Displays either the static IP address that was defined for the service IP or DHCP, which indicates that the service IP address is dynamically generated by a DHCP server. The service IP address is used if the node needs to be started after it has been removed from the cluster.
Note: If you do not select a service IP address, the SAN Volume Controller selects DHCP to automatically assign a service IP address.

IPv6 Network Prefix
Displays the network prefix that is associated with the IPv6 cluster and service IP addresses. Valid values are 0 - 127.
Gateway
Displays the IP address for the default gateway for the cluster.

Actions
