Use the Create E-mail Event Notification wizard in the SAN Volume Controller Console to
set up event notifications through an e-mail server. When events occur,
notifications are sent to the e-mail users that you have specified.
You can specify an e-mail server to send event notifications and inventory
reports to the IBM® Support Center
and local e-mail users.
Introduction
Use the Create E-mail Event
Notification–Introduction panel to learn about the actions that are
completed by the wizard. The wizard guides you through all the actions
that are necessary to set up e-mail notifications for the first time.
Before starting the wizard, ensure that you have the following information:
- Valid IP address for the e-mail server
- Contact information for the user who receive event notifications
- If you do not use the IBM Support
Center, you need an alternative e-mail address of an alternate e-mail
user.
In addition to this information, ensure that the SAN Volume Controller can
successfully contact the e-mail server.
Actions
The
following action is available:
- Continue
- Click this button to move to the next panel in the wizard. The
next panel will ask you to set contact details for e-mail users.
Set contact details
Use this panel in the
Create E-mail Event Notification wizard to specify contact details
for e-mail event notifications.
Fields
You can
update the following fields:
- E-mail Reply Address
- Enter the e-mail address to which a reply is sent.
- Contact Name
- Enter the name of the person to receive the e-mail.
- Machine Location
- Enter the physical location of the system that is
reporting the error. Valid location names consist only of alphanumeric
characters and spaces.
- Phone (Primary)
- Enter the primary contact telephone number.
- Phone (Alternate)
- Enter the alternate contact telephone number that
is used when you cannot reach the primary contact on the primary phone.

Set initial e-mail server
Use
this panel in the Create E-mail Event Notification wizard to enter
the IP address and other information on the e-mail server that receives
event notifications from the SAN Volume Controller cluster.
Initially one server can be set up to receive event notifications;
however, up to 5 can be set up at a later time.
Fields
You
can update the following fields:
- Server Name
- Enter the name of the e-mail server.
- IP Address
- Enter a valid IP address for the e-mail server. Both IPv4 and
IPv6 address formats are supported. If you are currently running both
protocols, the following options display:
- IPv4
- Enter a valid IPv4 address for the SMTP server.
- IPv6
- Enter a valid IPv6 address for the SMTP server.
- Port
- Enter the port for the e-mail server. The default value for the
SMTP port is 25, but this should be verified.
Actions
The following actions are
available:
- Continue
- Click this button to set the specified e-mail server to receive
event notifications and move to the next panel in the wizard.
Click Continue. The Set
Initial E-mail User panel appears.
Set initial e-mail user
Use this panel in
the Create E-mail Event Notification wizard to select the initial
e-mail user to receive notifications. It is recommended that you use
one of the IBM Support Centers
for your initial e-mail user.
Fields
The
following fields are available:
- Use IBM support center callhome1@de.ibm.com–The
Americas
- Select this support center address for SAN Volume Controller nodes
located in North America, Latin America, South America or the Caribbean
Islands.
- Use IBM support center callhome0@de.ibm.com–The
Rest of the World
- Select this support center address for SAN Volume Controller located
anywhere else in the world.
- Define custom support e-mail user
- Select this to specify a custom support e-mail user. If you select
this option, another panel displays where you can define the user.
On this panel define the following information to set the custom support
user and inventory and event notification settings:
- User Name
- Enter the name for the custom support e-mail user.
You can also select either of the user names and the corresponding
e-mail addresses for the IBM Support
Centers for your initial e-mail user on this panel.
- E-mail Address
- Enter the e-mail address for the custom support e-mail user.
- Event Notifications
- Event Notification Settings
- Select the following types of event notifications that the specified
user is sent.
- Send Error Notification
- Select whether events with notification type of error are
sent to the specified support user. When
an event notification with the type error is received
by the specified user, the problem must be fixed immediately. This
notification indicates a serious problem with the SAN Volume Controller cluster.
For example, the event that is being reported could indicate a loss
of redundancy in the system, and it is possible that another failure
could result in loss of access to data. The most typical reason this
type of notification is sent is because of a hardware failure, but
some configuration errors or fabric errors also are included in this
notification type.
- Inventory Reporting
- Indicate whether inventory reporting is sent to the specified
e-mail user. You can select the following options:

- Send Warning Notification
- Select whether events with notification type of warning are
sent to the specified local user. A warning
notification is sent to indicate a problem or unexpected condition
with the SAN Volume Controller.
Always immediately investigate this type of notification to determine
the effect that it might have on your operation and correct the problem
if necessary. A warning notification does not require any replacement
parts and therefore should not require IBM Support
Center involvement. However, the event being reported might indicate
a condition that could be fatal to your operating environment; for
example, a critical FlashCopy® operation
has failed.
- Send Informational Notification
- Select whether events with the notification type of informational are
sent to the specified local user. For these
types of notifications, no action is necessary to resolve them. This
notification indicates an event that was expected has occurred. For
example, a FlashCopy mapping
event has completed successfully. No remedial action is required when
these notification types are sent.
