Preinstallation tasks

Before installing your SAN Volume Controller, you need to complete certain steps with your disk controller systems and switches.

Perform the following steps before installing and configuring your SAN Volume Controllers:

  1. Install and configure your disk controllers.
Attention: To prevent loss of data, virtualize only those redundant array of independent disks (RAIDs) which provide some form of redundancy, that is, RAID 1, RAID 10, RAID 0+1 or RAID 5. Do not use RAID 0 because a single physical disk failure might cause the failure of many virtual disks.
  2. Create the RAID resources that you intend to virtualize.
  3. Install and configure your switches to create the two zones that the SAN Volume Controller needs:
    1. A disk zone that contains all the RAID controllers and the SAN Volume Controller.
    2. A host zone that contains all your host adapters and the SAN Volume Controller.
