Use the Starting Copy Process panel in the SAN Volume Controller Console to
start a copy process for the Metro
Mirror or Global Mirror relationship.
Fields
- Start Options
- Select one of the following start options:
- Forced start
- Select this option to start copying even if it leads to a temporary
loss of consistency. This option is required if the consistency group
is not synchronized and is in the Idling or Consistent Stopped state.
- Mark as clean
- Select this option if you want to start the Metro
Mirror or Global Mirror relationship
without overwriting any changes which were made to the remote VDisk
while the relationship was stopped. As a result, the
two copies may not be synchronized. The clean option is used when
you begin with synchronized primary and secondary VDisks that has
been stopped with write access to the secondary VDisk enabled. Enabling
write access moves the relationship to the Idling state and means
that while the relationship is in this state, data can be changed
on the secondary VDisk in the relationship. When the relationship
is restarted without using the Mark as clean option, all data that
has been changed on the secondary VDisk is overwritten with data from
the primary VDisk and the two copies are synchronized. Operators should
only use the mark as clean option when they fully understand the consequences
of unsynchronized VDisks in theGlobal Mirror relationship.
One scenario which can make use of the Mark as clean option is to
use tape backups to perform the initial synchronization of a Global Mirror relationship
using the following procedure:.
- Create Global Mirror relationship,
specifying that the primary and secondary VDisks are synchronized.
Use the Select Options panel in the Create Metro
Mirror or Global Mirror Relationship
wizard to specify the synchronized option for the relationship.
- Stop the or Global Mirror relationship,
enabling write access for the secondary VDisk to allow updates to
the recovery site. Use the Stopping Copy Process panel to enable write
access for the target VDisk.
- Stop applications at the primary site.
Note: Stopping the applications
before backing up the data ensures that the backup that you transfer
to the recovery site is a consistent copy which can be used to directly
recover the primary site.
- Backup primary VDisk by either backing up its data directly to
tape or use FlashCopy feature to copy the data and then transfer the
copied data to tape.
- Restart the applications.
- Move the backup tape to the recovery site and copy the data from
the backup tape to the secondary VDisks in the Global Mirror relationship.
- Restart the Global Mirror relationship
using the Mark as clean option, which instructs Global Mirror to only
copy the changes in data on the primary VDisks that have occurred
since the relationships were last stopped.
- Copy Direction
- Specify the copy direction. You must specify the copy direction
if this relationship is in the Idling state. The following values
are possible:
- Master > Auxiliary (primary = master)
- The master VDisk performs the role of primary VDisk and the copy
direction changes from master to auxiliary.
- Auxiliary > Master (primary = auxiliary)
- The auxiliary VDisk performs the role of primary VDisk and the
copy direction changes from auxiliary to master.
- Do not set or change the copy direction
- The copy direction remains the same.
