Creating a virtual disk

You can create virtual disks (VDisks) using the Create Virtual Disk wizard in the SAN Volume Controller Console. The Create Virtual Disk wizard guides you through the process of creating a VDisk.

A virtual disk (VDisk) is a logical disk that the cluster presents to the storage area network (SAN).

You can create a maximum of 2048 sequential or striped VDisks for each I/O group at one time.

Creating a virtual disk–Introduction
You can use the Create Virtual Disk wizard in the SAN Volume Controller Console to create both sequential and striped virtual disks (VDisks).
Creating a virtual disk–Select an I/O group
Use the Select an I/O Group panel in the Select the I/O group and the preferred node to handle I/O traffic for the virtual disks (VDisks) that you are creating. Optionally, you can select to allow the system to choose the I/O group and the preferred node, which balances I/O traffic for the VDisk across multiple nodes.
Creating a virtual disk–Set attributes
You can set attributes for a virtual disk (VDisk) on the Set Attributes panel in the Create Virtual Disk wizard in the SAN Volume Controller Console. You can choose to create a striped or sequential disk, select a method for caching data, and set other attributes related to the VDisk that you are creating.
Creating a virtual disk–Select MDisk group
You can select attributes for either striped or sequential virtual disks (VDisks) from the Select Attributes for VDisks panel in the Create Virtual Disk wizard in the SAN Volume Controller Console. For striped VDisks, data is striped at the extent level. One extent is allocated from each managed disks (MDisks) in the selected MDisk group. Sequential VDisks can have data stored sequentially on a single MDisk.
Creating a virtual disk–Select MDisk group (Copy 1)
Use the Select MDisk group (Copy 1) panel in the SAN Volume Controller Console to specify attributes for a mirrored copy of a virtual disk (VDisk). You can create either a sequential or striped VDisk. Depending on the type of VDisk you are creating, different options are available.
Creating a virtual disk–Name the VDisks
You can name the virtual disk (VDisk) from the Name the VDisks panel in the Create Virtual Disk wizard in the SAN Volume Controller Console.
Creating a virtual disk–Verify attributes
Use the Verify Attributes panel in the Create a Virtual Disk wizard in the SAN Volume Controller Console to validate that the attributes for the new virtual disk (VDisk) and any additional copies of a VDisk are correct.
Creating a virtual disk–Results
Use the Creating VDisk Results panel in the Creating a Virtual Disk wizard to monitor the progress of the virtual disks (VDisks) that are being created. A table of results displays when the VDisks creation progress completes.
