Updating Library Firmware

This topic describes how to upgrade or downgrade library firmware using the Web client. For more information about upgrading and downgrading library firmware, see About Updating Library Firmware.

CAUTION: After the update process starts, you must wait until it completes. Do not attempt to interrupt the process in any way. Loss of data or library operability could occur.

NOTE: This operation should not be performed concurrently by multiple administrators logged in from different locations. You can access the appropriate screens, but you cannot apply changes while another administrator is performing the same operation.

You need administrator privileges to update library firmware.

  1. The latest library firmware is listed on www.quantum.com/support. Contact Quantum Support for a copy of the latest firmware. For technical support contact information, see Getting More Information or Help. .
  2. Stop any processes on the host application that are communicating with the library. The library will be rebooted as part of the upgrade.
  3. Recommended: Capture a library snapshot.

The library snapshot file saves status information and trace logs for library components. This information helps technical support troubleshoot issues that might occur with the firmware upgrade. For more information about capturing a library snapshot, refer to About Capturing the Library Snapshot.

  4. Recommended: Save the library configuration.

For instructions on how to save the library configuration, see Saving the Configuration.

  5. Required: Unload media from all tape drives.
  6. Recommended: Resolve and close all open RAS tickets before updating firmware.
  7. Place the library firmware file (the file extension is .tgz) in a known location on your computer.
  8. From the Tools menu, select Update Library Firmware.

The Tools - Update Library Firmware screen displays.

  9. Click Browse.

  10. Locate the library firmware file (the file extension is .tgz) and click Open.
  11. Click Apply.

A confirmation dialog box displays asking you to confirm that you want to update the library firmware and restart the library.

  12. Click OK to continue with the library firmware update operation.

The Progress Window displays. The Progress Window contains information on the action, elapsed time, and status of the requested operation. The Progress Window closes automatically and the library reboots. You will need to log back on to the library once it has finished rebooting. Wait for the library to completely reboot and continue to the next step.

If Failure displays in the Progress Window, the operation failed. Follow the instructions listed in the Progress Window to resolve any issues that occurred during the operation. The library will automatically reload the previous version of library firmware and library configuration.

  13. Before logging on to the library, clear the Web browser's cache.
  14. Log on to the library and verify the library firmware installed successfully by selecting Reports > About > Scalar i500 report.
  1. NOTE: If the library is still in the process of restarting, the Web browser may display an error page or message when you try to access or log on to the Web client. If the restart process fails, the library will retry every ten minutes until the library successfully restarts.

  2. Save the library configuration.
