Retrieving Tape Drive Logs

The library allows you to retrieve tape drive logs using the Web client. Tape drive log information can be used to help troubleshoot the library, tape drive sled, and tape drive issues.

Since the log retrieval process can take up to 30 minutes, the tape drive and associated partition are automatically taken offline during the operation and brought back online when the operation completes. You will be asked to confirm that you want to take the tape drive and partition offline. (If the operation does not complete successfully, the partition remains offline until you turn it back online manually or restart the library. See Changing the Partition Mode.)

Tape drive log files adhere to the following naming convention: UDS_ID_SN.DMP, where ID identifies the tape drive coordinate location within the library and SN identifies the tape drive serial number.

You need administrator privileges to retrieve tape drive logs.

From the Tools menu, select Drive Operations.
The Tools - Drive Operations screen displays.
Select Retrieve tape drive log and click Next.
The Retrieve Drive Log screen displays.
Do one of the following:
- If your library contains multiple tape drive interface types, continue with step 4.
- If your library contains only one tape drive interface type, continue with step 5.
Select the interface type of the tape drive from which you want to retrieve logs and click Next.
The Retrieve Drive Log screen displays. The screen lists the following information about each installed tape drive:
- Partition
- Location
- Firmware
- Status
Select a tape drive from which you want to retrieve logs and click Next.

NOTE: If there is more than one page of tape drives, use the Page 1 of x arrows to view the additional tape drives.

NOTE: Bold column headings in the table can be sorted. For example, selecting the Location column heading will sort by location coordinates.

NOTE: Drives that are in Not-Ready state cannot be selected.

The Retrieve Drive Log screen appears.
Click Apply.
A caution screen might appear with information about taking the appropriate partition offline. Click OK.
The Progress Window displays. The Progress Window contains information on the action, elapsed time, and status of the requested operation. Do one of the following:
- If Complete appears in the Progress Window, the tape drive log was successfully retrieved. Do the following:
  1. Click Close to close the Progress Window.
    A file download dialog appears.
  2. Click Save.
    A Save as dialog appears.
  3. Use the dialog to determine where you want to save the file and click Save.
- If Failure appears in the Progress Window, the tape drive log was not successfully retrieved. Follow the instructions listed in the Progress Window to resolve any issues that occurred during the operation. If a complete tape drive log could not be retrieved, you may still be able to access a partial log. If so, a note will appear stating, "A complete tape drive log could not be retrieved, but a partial log is available and may be saved for further analysis once the progress window is closed." (If the operation does not complete successfully, the partition remains offline until you turn it back online manually or restart the library. See Changing the Partition Mode.)
