Work-embedded e-Learning

You try it: monitoring performance (Text version)

In this elearning module, you will learn how to use the historical summary chart to monitor system performance for the IBM(R) TS7700. The historical summary chart is a key diagnostics tool for TS7700, and can be used to monitor day-to-day trends in your servers workload.

To access the historical summary chart, log in to the TS7700, click the Monitor icon, and choose Performance. The historical summary chart displays data sets shown as lines or stacked columns. Performance statistics are shown for the selected cluster during a period of time that you specify. These statistics include data such as time delayed, copy refresh, deferred statistics system usage, and copy queue size. Optionally, you can display data for host throughput, system throttling, and several other data types.

There are several different elements of the chart. Just above the chart is the date and time range for the data currently displayed. Then to the upper left of the chart are three icons - Throughput, Throttling, and Copy queue Presets. These are used to change the chart data. To the lower left are three more icons which are Select metrics, Download spreadsheet, and Chart Settings. Lastly, below the chart is the legend. Let us take a look at each of these options and how they are used.

To change the date and time range, click on the current range displayed above the chart. First, choose the desired start date, then use the scroll arrows to select the start time. Notice that the end time changes based on the start time selected. You can manually change the end time, or you can quickly set the graph time duration by clicking the preset durations of 1 day, 12 hours, 1 hour, 30 minutes, or 15 minutes. Click Set to view the resulting chart.

Another option is to click the small clock found in the upper right hand corner which will show statistics for the last 24 hours. Keep in mind that the date and time displayed reflect the time zone in which your browser is located. If your local time is not available, these values will show in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC).

Now let us take a closer look at the three presets. Specific chart data that you want to view can be manually configured. However, clicking one of the presets will quickly and automatically populate the chart with the most commonly used configurations. Click the first of these presets which is called Throughput, and take note of the statistics that are displayed. Next, click Throttling, and then finally click Copy queue. Notice that each preset displays a different set of data. The legend will change with each preset so that you can identify which statistics are being shown. The date and time range that you previously set will not change when using a Preset.

To manually add or remove data from the historical summary chart, click Select metrics. The Select metrics window displays data sets which are organized into three sections - Throughput, Storage, and System. Each section has specific categories. Take a moment to click each section and review the options available in each. A description of what a metric is appears by hovering over the question mark icon. You can select up to 10 data sets for display. Choose a variety of metrics, then click Set to view the resulting performance chart.

You can turn a chart item on or off by clicking the desired item on the legend.

Below Select Metrics is the Download Spreadsheet option. Click this to open or save the currently plotted chart data as a .csv file, which can be opened using any spreadsheet application. The performance statistics display in list format. The historical summary chart stores only the last 30 days of system data. You can use the download function to compare your systems performance over a greater period of time.

Lastly, click Chart Settings to enable the low graphics mode, which will improve performance when many data points are displayed. Low graphics mode disables hover-over tool tips, but improves chart performance in older browsers. If cookies are enabled on your browser, this setting is retained when you exit the browser.

In this eLearning module, you learned how to use the historical summary chart to monitor system performance for the TS7700. For additional information, see the other topics in IBM Knowledge Center.
