SNMP traps (Text version)

One of the key management functions of the IBM® TS7700 management interface is the ability to view or modify the simple network management protocols, or SNMP, configured on a TS7700 cluster. SNMP is a networking protocol that allows the TS7700 to automatically gather and transmit information about alerts and status to other entities in the network. The SNMP summary page can be used for configuring SNMP traps that will log events such as logins, status changes, shut downs, and other events.

To configure settings that apply to SNMP traps on an entire cluster, login to the system, click Settings, then SNMP. The SNMP summary page displays. The cluster name is displayed at the top of the SNMP page. In the SNMP Settings section, click Enable SNMP Traps by clicking the check box, and then enter a valid name that identifies the trap community. The management application will not process an SNMP trap if the community name you enter is not valid. A valid community name is one that matches the community name for the SNMP agent receiving the trap. If you would like to send a test SNMP trap to all destinations, click Send Test Trap. A message at the top displays either the success or failure of any actions taken. Save the settings by clicking Submit Changes.

You must also configure SNMP trap destination settings.

To add an SNMP trap destination, go to the Destination Settings area on the lower part of the page, and click Add from the Select Action drop-down menu. Click Go and enter the IP address of the SNMP destination. Enter the port number to which you would like the SNMP traps sent. The default port number for the trap destination is 162. When ready, click OK.

You can also modify or delete existing SNMP trap destinations from this Select Action drop down menu.

In this eLearning module, you learned about configuring TS7700 SNMP traps. For additional information, see the other topics in IBM Knowledge Center.
