If you choose to create volumes manually using the DS Storage Manager interface, the first step is to create arrays, specifying your quantity and RAID type, and whether you want an 8-disk array. In the interface, you can choose to create arrays automatically or create custom arrays.
Then, put these arrays into ranks and define the storage type. Do this by creating a rank, selecting arrays to assign to that rank, and then defining rank properties.
Your next step is to create an extent pool and add the newly created ranks to the extent pool. You can create the extent pool automatically and select to use unassigned arrays and ranks, or you can create a custom extent pool and specify nickname, storage type, RAID type, and server.
The final step is to create zSeries or IBM System z or open systems volumes from the extent pool to present to the host.
After completing these steps, you now have logical volumes that are ready for use.
