Basic Setup

[ Watch Folder Setup | Portfolio Setup ]

QuoTracker comes, as in its initial public debut, with a default database of all the necessary elements to give you a good starting point for setting up your working environment. It contains all North American stocks and mutual funds (note: before v1.0, only TSE stocks and Canadian mutual funds were included). There are also several watch folders and portfolios that were created during the development of QuoTracker for testing purpose. Of course, you will change them to your own watch folders and portfolios.

There are two basic settings you may want to change to get your personalized QuoTracker started:

  1. Watch Folder Setup: In QuoTracker, you create watch folders for a group of related securities. These could be something corresponding to your holdings in your portfolio or whatever you want. For the sake of performance, QuoTracker separates watch folders in two kinds: the ones for stocks, and the others for mutual funds.

To setup your personal watch lists:

    • You can add new watch folders by selecting 'Add New Watch Folder...' function from the popup menu when right-clicking on a folder. A default name will be generated for the new watch folder, and you will be asked to rename it. Then the 'Edit Symbols' window will show up to let you enter ticker symbols you want to watch. See help for further details.
    • You can delete existing watch folders by selecting 'Remove Folder...' function from the popup menu when right-clicking on a folder.
    • You can rename existing watch folders by selecting 'Rename Folder...' function from the popup menu when right-clicking on a folder.
    • You can edit symbols in a watch folder anytime by selecting 'Edit Symbols...' function from the popup menu when right-clicking on a folder.
    • You can also paste symbols directly into a watch folder when they are copied from other watch folder, gridpane (using edit/copy symbols function of the popup menu), or somewhere else. Note that the symbols in clipboard must be in format like 'T:K+Q:MSFT+Z:IBM'.

  2. Portfolio Setup: QuoTracker portfolios behave in many aspects like a trading account. So, you can set up your QuoTracker portfolios like your real trading accounts because QuoTracker portfolios can give you more tracking options - we think. Of course, you can also use it for testing your investment skills or just for fun.

Unlike QuoTracker watch folders, you can put stocks and mutual funds into the same portfolio because it is common that you can buy both stocks and mutual funds from the same account. Furthermore, a watch list can be changed easily by pasting the collected symbols into the watch folder. However, information in a portfolio is persistent and cannot be changed easily, although you do have options to make changes. There are a few special calculated fields for a portfolio, which can be shown by different view formats.

    To setup your personal portfolios:

    • You can add new portfolio by selecting 'Add New Portfolio...' function from the popup menu when right-clicking on a portfolio. A default name will be generated for the new portfolio, and you will be asked to rename it. Then the 'Portfolio Transactions' window will show up to let you enter your transactions. As usual, you may want to deposit some cash into your account before your start 'trading'.
    • You can delete existing portfolios by selecting 'Remove Portfolio...' function from the popup menu when right-clicking on a portfolio. Use it with caution because it is not recoverable once deleted.
    • You can rename existing watch folders by selecting 'Rename Portfolio...' function from the popup menu when right-clicking on a portfolio.
    • You can enter transactions into a portfolio anytime by selecting 'Enter Transactions...' function from the popup menu when right-clicking on a portfolio.

These are the essential settings to start your personalized investment tracking with QuoTracker.
