You may want to change some default options to meet your own needs. In QuoTracker there are plenty of settings for your customization, and most of them are collected in the 'Options...' function from the 'File' menu. For example:
- If you don't want to see certain categories, disable them in the General tab. Some startup and closing actions are defined here as well.
- To change main windows' outlook, go to View tab. Here you can define how toolbar and statusbar to be shown and which font to use.
- To change the default quote server (Canada-stockwatch or Yahoo) or automatic update frequency, go to Updates tab. Here you can also define market hours and holidays that are used to enable/disable market hour activities.
- To change appearance of the gridpane, go to Display tab. Here you can define display patterns for grid headers, quote area, last price, up/down change, today's news, and portfolio summary (for displaying portfolio only)
- To set alert behavior, go to Alert tab. Here you can define what will happen when an alert is activated: highlight or flash quotes, play a sound, or send a message to the center alert box. Note that the real alert criteria must be set for each individual security by using 'Edit' -> 'Alert Definition' function from the popup menu of the gridpane.
- To set quick links to your favorite web sites, go to Links tab. There are three types of quick links: Symbol-specific links, double-click links, and general links. Symbol-specific links give you options to define links to chart, quote, news, profile or others of your favorite web sites, which can be easily and quickly accessed by right-click on that symbol and select a link from the popup menu. Double-click links are actually shortcuts of the frequently used symbol-specific links. It allows you to quickly get to a link by double-click on a specific area of the gridpane. The general links are shortcuts to your favorite sites, not specially related to a security (or maybe it is but we don't know how to bind them). It is like Microsoft IE's favorites, but with a small additional feature that it allows you to specify whether you want to see the link in a new window. General links are accessible either from the 'View' menu or from the popup menu of the gridpane.
Note that many options (but not all) are also available in the main window's menus for your quick access.
You may want to adjust the view format or define your own new ones (sorry, we can't find a better name for it to distinguish it from what the 'Display' tab of the options window does - your suggestion?). There are three (actually only two) types of view format in QuoTracker: The basic view format (one for each group, i.e. stocks, mutual funds, and portfolios), the default view format (for stock group and mutual fund group only) for a specific folder, and the user-defined view format. A user-defined view format becomes default view format of a folder when the view format is named after the folder name. Whenever a folder is selected for display, QuoTracker will use the default view format if defined. Otherwise, it will use either a previously manually selected view format or the basic view format if a new group is entered.
You can modify any view format by changing its display content, order and appearance. You can add your own new format to show some special fields meaningful to you. You can rename or delete your own defined formats but not the basic ones.
- To modify a view format, right-click anywhere on the header of the gridpane and select 'Display Settings' and then 'Manage Columns...' from the popup menu. In the 'Grid Display Format' window, you can select the display content by check or uncheck items, reorder columns by drag-and-drop, change column header, width and alignment for each individual column.
- To add a new format, right-click on the header of the gridpane and select 'Save Format As...' to save the current format as a new one and then modify the new format using similar procedure as described above.
- To define a default view format for a folder, name the new view format after the folder, and then modify. You can also make an existing view format default through rename it.
- You can change the current view format temporarily by using functions in the popup menu (when right-clicking on grid header). For example, you can hide the current column where mouse is right-clicked. You can change its alignment for the current column. You can reorder columns by directly drag-and-drop column headers, or you can change column width by directly drag-and-drop column separators. These changes are temporary unless you save it using 'Save Format' function from the same popup menu before you move to another format.
