Description
-----------

Advanced Disk Catalog (ADC) is an easy to use tool with
explorer-like interface which allows you to catalog the drives:
floppy disks, hard drives (including network ones), optical
disks, CD-ROMs, ZIP disks and other media.

With ADC you are able to:

	- Organize volumes, folders and files into categories;
	- Add comment to each file, folder and disk;
	- Analyse ZIP, ARJ, RAR, CAB, ARC and ACE archives;
	- Search for files/folders using file name or your own
          comments (with wildcards), limiting the search
	  results by date, size and category;
	- Search for files in archives;
	- Update volume information (with saving comments and
	  categories);
	- Generate the reports which can be imported from the
	  programs like Microsoft Excel;
	- Search for duplicated files;
	- Import descriptions from files like "file_id.diz",
	  "files.bbs", "descript.ion" etc.;
	- Extract description from executable modules (EXE,
	  DLL etc.);
        - Extract descriptions from MP3 files (ID3 tags etc);
        - Extract information about audio CDs from Internet CD
          database (CDDB);
	- Compare catalogued disk with actual
	  (new files, changed files, modified files);
	- ... and much more.

ADC written totally in C++, doesn't use any database engines and
so very fast. The database generated by ADC is very compact.

Installation
------------

Important! If you've got ADC not from our web page, but from
the other source (magazine CD or some software library), please
visit our home page - you'll probably find the later version;
usually, we release the updates about once a month.

We recommend you to uninstall the previous version of ADC (if
you have one) from your computer before installing this one. You
can do this via "Add/Remove Programs" Control Panel applet. If
you'll get the notification that the ADC folder is not empty, be
careful when removing it: it may contain the .cat files (the
databases created by ADC) you may wish to keep. Uninstall, by the
way, will not remove the options you set in older version, so
the new version, being installed, will have exactly the same
settings as before.

To install ADC, just run the "setup.exe" and follow the
instructions. You'll need to select the target directory
and the components to install.

Note: the Advanced Disk Catalog may not run correctly under
Windows 95 (prior to OEM Service Release 2) if the new version of
common control library (comctl32.dll) is not installed; the
program requires version 4.70 or later (version 4.72 is
recommended). The installation program of the Advanced Disk
Catalog checks what version do you have, and it'll ask you to
update this file if it is old. If it will happen, just run the
"41Comupd.exe" to update your system; reboot the computer and
start the setup program again. For your convenience, we're
distributing "41comupd.exe" together with the Advanced Disk
Catalog setup files.

Technical support
-----------------

Before you contact us, please do the following:

- Be sure that you're doing everything right. We all make
  mistakes sometimes... Be attentive.
- Look at the Help file: it may already contain an answer to
  your question. A lot of people ask us something like "how
  do I:", though the complete information is there.
- Run the File Integrity Checker program (installed in Advanced
  Disk Catalog program group). It just verifies main ADC program
  files; if it shows "fail" or "file not found" for either
  adc.exe or validate.dll, it means that your installation is
  corrupted, or you may have a virus in your system. In this case,
  the program will not work properly - so, you'll have to run an
  antivirus program and/or reinstall ADC.
- Visit ADC home page in the Internet at
  http://www.elcomsoft.com/adc.html. It's a good chance that you'll
  find the newer version of ADC there. If the serious bug has
  been found in the program, but the new version is not ready yet,
  we make the hot fix for it.

But if you still have a problem with ADC and noting else helps,
please contact technical support at support@elcomsoft.com.

Please inform us about the following:

  - Advanced Disk Catalog version (from "About" dialog)
  - Advanced Disk Catalog serial number (if you're a registered user)
  - where did you get Advanced Disk Catalog (http or ftp site)
  - Windows 95/98/NT/2000 version (including service packs and other
    fixes installed), US or international, OEM or not
  - computer information: CPU type and speed, installed memory
  - description of your problem (as much information as possible
    to retrieve the problem)

Note: you may want to read the "How to Determine the Version of
Windows 95 in Use" article by Microsoft. Use the following URL:

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q158/2/38.asp

In order to get the complete computer information (working under
Windows 95), open the Control Panel, click on "System" applet and
press "Print" on "Device Manager" tab.

If you have any comments or suggestions for the next releases,
please don't hesitate to post them to us.
