		  Technical information about MAILguardian

Introduction
------------
MAILguardian provides Application Independent Security (AIS) to
e-mail software packages. It secures all e-mail packages using
standard protocols SMTP/POP3, automatically and transparently.

MAILguardian uses Secured Channels for the secure transfer of
e-mail messages between two end users. The secure channel is an
agreement between both parties which specifies the security
parameters of the message transmission (encryption algorithms,
digital signature and encryption key).

Each message sent through the Secure Channel is encrypted and
digitally signed to prevent eavesdropping and tempering.

Installation Note
-----------------

On Windows 95, a version of WinSock (WinSock 2.0) will be installed along with
MAILguardian (WinSock is a component of the operating system that enables
network communication).

Requirements
------------
* PC with 486 processor or higher.
* 8 MB RAM.
* 5 MB of free space on the hard disk.
* Microsoft Windows 95 or Microsoft NT 4.0.
* TCP/IP connection

Some IMPORTANT MAILguardian Technical Information
-------------------------------------------------

Once you have established secure channels with your correspondents
MAILguardian operates automatically and transparently.

Creating Secure Channels:
There are 3 ways to create a secure channel:

1. Request Secure Channel to a designated correspondent

a) Under the heading Secure Channel select New -> Request Secure Channel.
b) Type in the e-mail address of the person with whom you
wish to create a secure channel.
c) Click Start.

A popup screen appears with your designated corrspondent's email
address and an open padlock icon. The next time you send/receive an
e-mail from/to this correspondent, MAILguardian will send a return
message requesting a secure channel. Once your correspondent has
accepted this request, his MAILguardian will in turn send you a
confirmation message, the padlock will appear closed. Only then will
all future e-mail communications with this person be secured.

2. On-line Creation

a) Under the heading Secure Channel select New -> On-line Creation.
b) Type in the e-mail address of the person with whom you wish to
   create a secure channel.
c) Enter a shared secret (word or phrase) that you and your correspondent have
   agreed upon.
d) Click Create.

Although the new secure channel will appear with a closed padlock
icon, the channel will be secured only after your correspondent has
entered the same shared secret. Only then will all future e-mail
communications with this person be secured.

3. Automatic Creation

a) Under the heading settings, select Security Settings and then
   Preferences.
b) Select Automatically Request Secure Channels.
c) Select Always Create a Secure Channel Upon Request.

MAILguardian will request a secure channel with every correspondent to
whom you send e-mail. If your correspondent is using MAILguardian,
your MAILguardian will receive a message in return, and the secure
channel will then be established. The padlock icon will appear closed
and all future e-mail communications with this person will be secured.

Uninstalling
------------
1. On Windows NT, log-on as the administrator.
2. Close all your Internet applications.
3. Run the Control Panel.
4. Activate Add/Remove Programs.
5. Select MAILguardian and click Add/Remove.
