This zip file contains V5.69 AlphaBIOS firmware and installation
instructions for Digital AlphaStation 255 systems.

WARNING: WITH THE MATERIALS INCLUDED IN THIS ZIP KIT, INSTALLING
ALPHABIOS IS AN IRREVERSABLE STEP. YOU CANNOT EASILY
RESTORE THE SRM CONSOLE TO THE WORKSTATION.

This firmware should be installed if you plan to run Microsoft Windows
NT version 3.51 or later. No release prior to Windows NT 3.51 is supported
on the AlphaStation 255.

NOTE: IF YOU ARE CURRENTLY RUNNING ALPHABIOS V5.10, YOU MUST USE
FWUPDATE.EXE TO UPDATE THE FIRMWARE ON YOUR MACHINE.

Installing AlphaBIOS 5.69 is accomplished by copying the file fwupdate.exe
onto a FAT-formatted floppy, then selecting "Upgrade AlphaBIOS" from the
initial Setup screen. Setup is entered by pressing F2 at the AlphaBios boot screen.
The machine will reboot into an menu driven upgrade package. Follow the instuctions
presented on your console.

If your AlphaStaion 255 is currently running Digital UNIX or OpenVMS, the
process of installing AlphaBIOS is somewhat more complicated. You must
first create a bootable floppy of AlphaBIOS, using the file fwupdate.exe.
You can do this on an OpenVMS system or Digital UNIX, or, if you have
a Alpha Windows NT system, you can use the included "makeboot" to create
the floppy; see its "usage" message for invocation details. Once you
have created the bootable floppy, set the motherboard DIP switch pack
switches Config0 and Config1 to OFF and ON, respectively, and power up
the workstation; AlphaBIOS will boot from the floppy you have created.
When that happens, proceed as in the third paragraph to complete the
installation.
