If you already have an APU update diskette, skip to the
"Perform the update" section below.

NOTE: REGARDING UPGRADING FROM ALPHA BIOS 5.29 AND BELOW TO 5.30 OR GREATER:

The ordering of the ATAPI driver has been modified. If your Personal
Workstation contains a IDE harddrive AND a SCSI harddrive, you will need
to do the following steps following the update:

1) Go into the AlphaBIOS Setup by hitting the <F2> key once the Personal Workstation
   splash screen appears.
2) Go to the Utilities/OS Selection Setup menu by using the arrow keys.
3) Modify the boot selections to "point" to the correct hard drive.
4) Save the new boot selections by hitting <F10>.
5) At the prompt to verify if you wish to save, press <Enter>
5) Exit the AlphaBIOS Setup and reboot.

** Contents of diskette **

The contents of this directory are:

	v669apu.sys
	makeboot.exe

The file:

	v669apu.sys

contains the following firmware components:

	apu 6.69
	SRM 6.6-29
	POST 4.45
	AlphaBIOS 5.34 (24-September-1997)

** Create the update diskette **

Create a bootblock diskette with the makeboot utility. Makeboot runs
only on Windows NT Alpha systems:

	c:\tmp> makeboot -f v669apu.sys -d a:

Label this diskette:

	Digital Personal Workstation 433a
	SRM firmware update utility (v669apu.sys)

** Perform the update **

Shutdown Windows NT (if it was running).

Start up the 433a and move to the AlphaBIOS setup screen (Press the
<F2> key during the startup process).

Select the CMOS Setup... menu item.

Use the <F6> key to enter Advanced CMOS Setup.

Use the <TAB> key to move to the Console Selection field. When this
field is highlighted, use the Up/Down Arrow keys to select Digital
UNIX Console (SRM).

Hit <F10> to save this change.

Hit <F10> to leave the CMOS setup menu. Hit <Enter> to confirm.

Power cycle the system (or press the reset switch).

When SRM is ready you will see the ">>>" prompt.

Insert the v669apu.sys bootblock diskette into drive A: and tell
SRM to boot with this command:

	>>> b dva0

When the diskette has booted (large image, be patient), the update
utility will prompt you with "Apu->". To upgrade your firmware:

	Apu-> update

	Confirm the update with "Y"
	Messages about SRM and ARC/AlphaBIOS updates will be displayed.

When this phase of the update has completed, you will update the POST
(SROM) with this command:

	Apu-> update srom

When the POST (SROM) update is completed, power cycle or reset the
system. SRM will restart. To switch back to AlphaBIOS enter this command:

	>>> set os_type nt

and then power cycle the system or press the reset switch. AlphaBIOS
will restart. You may confirm that new versions of firmware have been
updated correctly by selecting the Display System Configuration
AlphaBIOS menu item and reviewing the displayed revision information.
