ARC Firmware V4.58 for AlphaServer 2x00A 4/xxx (EV4 systems)
7 January 1999

Updating the AlphaServer 2x00A 4/xxx Firmware

1. Create a firmware floppy. To do this, follow these steps:

        a) UnZIP this kit into a directory on your hard disk.

        b) Insert a blank floppy into your floppy drive, and copy
           these files onto it:

               copy *.exe a:\

Label this floppy, "V4.58 AlphaServer 2x00A 4/xxx ARC firmware."

2. Shut down your AlphaServer system and reboot it. This may be done
by selecting the "Shutdown and Restart" option in the "Shutdown
Computer" logoff popup window. Proceed onto the next step when
you are at the ARC Boot Menu.

3. When the ARC Boot Menu appears, note the version at the top of
    the screen.

If it is 4.58, then Congratulations! You already have this
firmware installed and you do not need to update your firmware.
To install Windows NT, read the Configuration Guide (or Release Notes)
that came with your Windows NT kit. You can also obtain a copy of the
Configuration Guide at our World Wide Web site, at
    http://www.windowsnt.digital.com/support/driver.asp

If it is less than V4.58, then an update of the firmware is needed in
order to run Windows NT; proceed to step 4.

4. Insert the "V4.58 AlphaServer 2x00A 4/xxx ARC firmware" floppy into your
    floppy drive.

5. Select "Supplementary menu..." and press Enter.

6. Select "Install new firmware" and press Enter. Please wait while the
system verifies and loads the update procedure and reboots the system.

7. Once the update image has been loaded, you are prompted with the
following query: "If you have a floppy containing option firmware, please
insert it now and hit <return> when ready. Or just hit <return> to proceed
with the standard console update." Press Enter.

8. After a brief pause, the message "Options not loaded" is displayed. This
    is normal.

9. The prompt "Please enter your operating system OS_TYPE: [NT,UNIX,OpenVMS]:"
appears. Type NT and press Enter.

10. At the "UPD>" prompt, type update, and press Enter.

11. When prompted to update the arcflash and srmflash, type Y and press Enter.

12. Once the update is complete, the UPD> prompt reappears. You can now
reset your system by pressing the reset button on the front panel.

If you encounter any difficulties in updating the firmware, call the
DIGITAL technical support line for further assistance. In the U.S.A the
    telephone number is (800)354-9000.

    Your firmware update is complete.

New features in this firmware:

This version includes a change to ARC to allow the system TOY (Time of Year)
clock to be updated if it had been zeroed (as was happening in the field upon
mainboard replacements).

Thank you for your support of Windows NT and Alpha.
