Standalone BACKUP Bootstrap?
The Question is:

I have a VAX 4000-200 that I do not have the password for. I have found the FAQ
information and I have been able to get the system started with a
conversational boot. My problem is that when I leave SYSBOOT>, at the $
prompt, I cannot execute any commands
except backup. This is because the system is in standalone backup mode.

Here are the commands that I have entered:

>>>b e0000001
SYSBOOT> SET/STARTUP OPA0:
SYSBOOT> SET WRITESYSPARAMS 0
SYSBOOT> CONTINUE

What must I do to not be in standalone backup mode?

The Answer is :

You have not booted into an OpenVMS system disk root, you have booted
into a standalone BACKUP disk or into a standalone BACKUP root -- this
system disk might or might not have an OpenVMS root, you have booted
from SYSE -- this is the E in the uppermost nibble of R5 -- and this
root is typically reserved for the standalone BACKUP root.

  Try the console boot command:

    B/R5:1

And see if this bootstraps into an OpenVMS VAX system root.
