$ Disks Logging Errors? Bad Blocks? The Question is: MWe have a disk drive that has 2 errors recorded on it and would like to run aL utility, if there is one available, to analyze the device. We tried the VMS& ANALYZE Command and got this message: The Answer is : B Please contact your hardware support organization for assistance@ with this and with other similar hardware problems or requests> for assistance with hardware diagnostics or troubleshooting. C For information on OpenVMS bad block handling, please see (6926). ? In general, modern disks that are logging user-visible errors@ are failing, and should be replaced. Tools such as formattersB are of little use with modern devices and can unfortunately tend> to accelerate the demise of the device -- the OpenVMS WizardD recommends BACKUP be used first and foremost, to create a completeC saveset or archival copy of the data. Then BACKUP can be used toA restore to the target disk, and -- as is discussed in (6926) toA trigger bad block handling. But again, disks that are found to7 be generating user-obvious errors tend to be failing. ? If you wish to reset the error counts (without rebooting) and@ continue -- and again, you will want to verify the disk BACKUP@ for validity and currency -- you will want to review the error! information in the OpenVMS FAQ. 0 Answer written or last revised on 17-MAR-2004
