NOTES:

VME & VXI EPC's can only have one Adaptec 6x60
SCSI controller in the system and it must be
at IO 0X340. Both VME & VXI use IO 0X814x ports,
for devices that only decode 10 IO Address lines
the IO 0X814x is echoed at 0X14x. Thus the Adaptec
6x60's alternate IO 0X140 is stepping on or being
stepped on by the VME or VXI subsystem.

Reasons for Using ASPI Managers:

    From Appendix C:

You can use Adaptec host adapters without an ASPI manager.
However, you need an ASPI manager if you want to:

Install and use more than two SCSI hard disk drives.

Control SCSI devices that are not under the host
              adapter BIOS control.

Install and use a CD-ROM drive, SCSI tape drive, or
              removable-media drive.

Change the host adapter configuration with the
command line options described in appendix C.

The ASPI Managers:

    From Appendix C:

ASPI2DOS.SYS it the 6x60 chip ASPI manager,
ASPI?DOS.SYS drivers are for other Adaptec
              SCSI chip sets.

ASPI2DOS.SYS is required if any other ASPI
              Manager is used.

ASPI2DOS.SYS will recognize all eight possible
LUNs(Logical Unit Number) associated with each
SCSI ID if the /L option is on the
              DEVICE=...\ASPI2DOS.SYS /L line.

    From Appendix D:

ASPIDISK.SYS is required for hard disk drives
not under BIOS control, hard disk drives greater
than 1GB in size, and removable-media, and drives
              with Multiple LUNs.

ASPICD.SYS is required to support CD-ROM drives
and Microsoft's MSCDEX.EXE is also required to
              support CD-ROM drives.

EZ-SCSI Applications:

    From Chapter 3:

Both SCSIFMT.EXE and AFDISK.EXE require ASPI
Managers to do their jobs. For disk drives
              under BIOS control use FDISK.EXE & FORMAT.COM.

              SCSIFMT.EXE is a DOS low-level formatting utility
for SCSI hard disks, removable media, Floptical
drives, and magneto-optical drives. You can also
use SCSIFMT.EXE to scan a disk device for surface
defects before you store data on it.

AFDISK.EXE is a DOS formatting and partitioning
utility for SCSI hard disks, removable media, and
              magneto-optical drives. Use FDISK.EXE & FORMAT.COM
for hard disks under BIOS control. Use AFDISK.EXE
for any disk drive under ASPI Manager control.
