Reusable code. Until recent times, it was just a dream, or at best the result of careful and arduous planning. Thanks to VisualAge, however, we can now all enjoy this benefit today. And as more and more VisualAge reusable parts become available, our time-to-market will significantly decrease.
Microsoft Corporation entered the world of reusable components a few years ago with its product Visual Basic. The foundation of Visual Basic's reusability is its VBX specification which enables developers to create "parts" that can be used by any other VBX-enabled product development tool.
Many product development tools in addition to Visual Basic now support the VBX specification. These include Borland's Object Windows Library, Microsoft's Foundation Classes, Gupta's SQL Windows, and others. Since the marketplace is so large, many companies have devoted the time necessary to create very useful VBXs.
The VBX Connection for VisualAge and IBM Smalltalk opens up the world of VBX components to VisualAge and IBM Smalltalk developers. As the illustration shows, you use VBXs just like you use VisualAge parts. Or if you are in a Smalltalk-only environment, we create a Smalltalk class that accurately maps all of the attributes, events, and methods of the VBX. It's just as if the VBX were a native Smalltalk class; or in the case of VisualAge, a native VisualAge part.
In Version 3 of IBM VisualAge for Smalltalk, native VBX enablement has been added. Budget Software's VBX Connection for VisualAge and IBM Smalltalk complements that feature with a more robust VBX-enabling approach, as well as continues to provide VBX support for IBM's Version 2 level products.
