IBM Task Management Framework
for VisualAge for Smalltalk

Whether you are developing complex business applications or a pilot project, the IBM Task Management Framework can help you organize and present the views for your application's tasks. By using the framework services, you can focus on the business problem instead of infrastructure, and improve the consistency of your application's appearance and behavior.

A generic application shell supplies the visual foundation of the framework. The shell can be easily customized with the VisualAge composition editor for your application. Through simple visual programming, you can add your task views to the shell and they will have access to the framework.

The framework provides services for:

• Starting tasks, either from the shell or other tasks
• Initializing task views from your business domain
• Ending tasks in response to OK, Cancel, and Apply requests
• Navigating among active tasks (backward, forward, or from a list of active tasks)
• Defining units of work when multiple views are needed for a single, logical task
• Sending notifications among interacting tasks
• Tracing your application's execution

The generic shell includes visual parts for accessing framework services. For example, the shell tool bar has buttons for navigating (backward, forward, home, and the task map that lists active tasks) and ending tasks (OK, Cancel, and Apply).

In addition, you can customize the shell by

• Specifying a logo view that is displayed when your application starts
• Specifying a startup task that is always started first when your application starts
• Adding a logon window that prompts for userid and password when your application starts.
• Enabling a trace option that generates trace information during your application's execution
