A Word from the General Manager

This third edition of the VisualAge Resource Catalog brings you the latest in complementary application development software for IBM's VisualAge family of object-oriented, visual power tools for professional developers.

The function available in VisualAge continues to expand to support new platforms and easier access to your data and existing applications. Our catalog is expanding too, with even more information on component software and complementary tools from IBM and other providers around the world. For the very latest updates, see the Internet version of the Resource Catalog on the World Wide Web.

The software industry is embracing object-oriented technology and component reuse like never before. More and more third-party vendors offer products that match your business needs, no matter how complex or specialized. Component software ranges from the smallest widget to the largest industry-specific framework. Complementary tools address all phases of the application development life cycle... all designed and delivered by experts in their domain to work specifically with VisualAge development tools.

With VisualAge you can provide the application function you need in the language and platform of your choice, and take advantage of object technology at the pace your business dictates, with the resources you select. I hope this catalog can help you make your mark on the world of application software.

Sincerely,

Steve Mills

Introduction

This edition of the VisualAge Resource Catalog is dedicated to the topic of VisualAge-related software products from IBM and from independent software vendors (ISVs).

VisualAge-enabled component software and VisualAge-complementary development tool software are described in this catalog, which profiles products from dozens of different companies as well as IBM. ISVs are sponsored by IBM through its VisualAge Object Connection Partners in Development program and offer both reusable component "part" software and VisualAge-complementary development tool products.

This edition is new in several ways... it is expanded in one and abbreviated in another. First, where the first two editions were dedicated to only the VisualAge for Smalltalk product, this one reflects the expansion of VisualAge as a brand which now includes visual programming power tools for a family of programming languages. Since VisualAge (for Smalltalk) was first released in March 1994, the brand has expanded into additional language environments. The Object Connection program now supports VisualAge for Smalltalk, VisualAge for C++, VisualAge for COBOL, VisualAge Generator, and VisualAge for Java. The catalog will continue to keep pace with other VisualAge products as they roll out.

Second, this edition is less comprehensive than the previous ones. Missing are chapters on "Consulting and Services," "Education and Training," and "Related Publications." Where this edition focuses primarily on software product resources, these important service-oriented resources are planned for a separate future VisualAge catalog.

In this edition you will find an exciting array of software products that, together with the VisualAge development language of your choice, equip the professional application developer with the most powerful and comprehensive development solution available in the market today. Each product is developed by specialists in its functional domain. In the area of component software, this puts the power and expertise of the best minds to work on each and every functional aspect of the intended application. In the area of development tools, this concept puts the strongest and widest array of power tools possible on the developers' workbench... each developed by an expert in their field. Working together with ISVs to deliver on the promise of object technology, IBM is bringing the professional software developer "a powerful new vision of programming!"*

New products from Object Connection member third-party vendors are being added to the catalog each month; to get the latest, see the Web version of the Resource Catalog.
